What animal wins a race that's 100m in water then 100m on land

I'm not so sure I believe these water speeds for deer and antelope. 13 mph in the water is pretty effing fast even for something with fins, let alone a deer with stick legs.

1) Not nearly as fast as a skinnier person. WAY too much mass to accelerate

2) I'm not saying bears aren't fast. Just that their acceleration wouldn't be able to match that of a horse or river otter. In fact, the only way the bear would win would be if it was WAY ahead out of the water. But with the river otter, with its good swimming ability and acceleration, would thrash any bear. The only reason horses and moose are in consideration is because they are decent swimmers and very fast on land.

Deer speed in water does seem quick... 13mph? That's faster than 5 minute miling...

Otter would crush moose in the water. Moose is just dog paddling but otters are super streamlined and swim like fish with their whole body and tail.

Basilisk runs on water cuz it's super light, not because it goes 20mph.

I did find ostrich(es?) can swim, but not faster than a bear, moose etc so they're right out.

How fast can a horse swim and can someone refresh me how fast otters and seals can go on land?

A Water Chevrotain would also be a good choice. It's like a mini deer crossed with a beaver. They do tend to run along the bottom though.

The speed of the deer depends on the definition of swimming in the original post. If the water is shallow enough for the deer to jump along the bottom then it probably can go 13 mph. However, if were defining swiming using olympic rules (one cannot touch bottom) there is no way in hell a deer can swim 13 mph in water, i've witnessed a deer swimming before and followed it with a boat and i'll tell you first hand they are slow as hell in water. Same goes for a moose, they can haul ass if their legs are running along the bottom due to their long skinny legs but if its deeper then that they loose there advantage and become slow as hell.

So you're saying the moose "loose there" advantage in deeper water??

I read that about deer it said he timed it with the tachometer on his motorboat how do you do that.

Why is always 13 mph never 10 or 12 or 14 or something.

A Sea Lion could hit 25 mph in the water and has the equipment to move well on land as well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxyAuop2DHw). Guessing he could sprint at least ten miles an hour on land he could throw down a 31.1 for the full event... plus they are smart enough that you could train for max performance come race day.
