They can do it in Ethiopia, but not in free market America.

It's not impossible. They do it for the Olympics, so why not World XC. For many World XC is the most prestigious title as it's the hardest to win.

Too early to compare Abshero against Bekele. But the point is that as a jr. he has run a 15k faster than the US mens record.

It's acceptable for collegiate distance runners who have a shot in an Olympic year to redshirt, which is half the battle.

Just doing some quick research on Abshero and I'm wondering if he's the "next" Wanjiru. Is he signed up to do the London marathon? Looks like he's on betting websites giving odds for how well he's going to do in London.

42:17 road 15km at 17. I can't find up to date junior lists anywhere but I'm guessing if he's running London, the jr record may be in jeopardy. I know Wanjiru ran a 42:08 enroute to 59:16 at about a year older than Abshero during his 15km.

Yeah yeah, I know, he's actually 46... yada yada.

Any predictions on who will get this one? Those kenyans better not screw up and waste this golden opportunity, or they are gonna have to wait for bekele to retire if they still want another goal medal after today.

I agree and would hate to be Legese Laminsi from Ethiopia....the #5 man cost his nation a world title. Mark my words - this will be the last time he competes internationally for Ethiopia.

I fail to understand why American Senior Men and Women do not treat this race with the same respect.
