To be fair that course map was pretty f**king confusing.

The woman at the corner telling the runners to run straight was wearing a shirt with a Chico State logo on it.

It could have been UCSD track coach Darcy Ahner, the woman at the corner looked similar to the picture on the UCSD track website.

It definately was not UCSD XC assistant coach Lindsay Stalker

Highly unlikely that it was one of the UCSD coaches or assistants if she was in fact wearing a shirt with a Chico State logo.

There must have been a second assistant steering the group the wrong way. She was hiding behind the bushes on the grassy knoll.

Remember the group went back and to the left.

This was a coup d’état at the highest levels of the NCAA.

Chico doesn't even have any female assistant coaches, who else would be wearing a Chico Polo, and why would anyone be listening to a chico fan when there was people in UCSD STAFF shirts at every intersection

Look I tried of everyone saying some much trash and ragging on people so hard like on flotrackr on the video and on here. First off UCSD did not need to provide and type of lead bike if they didn't want to, it is no where in the rules that there needs to be one. EVERYONE had a chance to get a map either from their coach or if there coach was unprepared then to download it off the UCSD website. In addition that no one has seemed to mention at the turn that everyone want flying past and missed, well there was a post their to tell you to go that way and chalk on the ground going that way. I dont know what more people need to go the right way. People make mistakes and any true runner knows that sometimes dumb ass fan get in your way and you need to just go right through them. But no one seemed to be willing to. If one or two people where dumb asses and took a wrong turn this conversation would not be happening. But because the whole races was dumb asses and messed up we are.

Furthermore, UAA makes no sense I dont know how you can write a article saying in one part despite having to start over the results are how they should be, but then go on to complain about how certain athletes where affected more then others and makes the wrong runners get all region. What does it only effect their runners or the runners that should get top 15. No it effect every team differently. The fact of the matter is that by the 6k mark in the race, most everyone was back to where they should be respectively and then the race was called by someone who wasnt even at the meet because enough coach called saying it is unfair. If the first race would of never got lost WWU would of never made it to nationals. There number one runner was running dumb and I can say that because I dont care how good he felt you dont go out in front of a sub 28 10k runner who went to the O trails for the 10k and not die really hard on a unforgiving xc course. Honestly they were running dumb the first race and should be glad they got a second chance. And for anybody else who complains honestly just shut up, because stuff happens and you dont need to go and inslut people and talk a bunch on bs.

Obviously somebody at UCSD has a stick up their butt since their team choked hard core and ran like crap. So, you can rant but no, we aren't going to shut up. Your biased and uninformed comments show that you obviously are either ignoring the facts or didn't bother to read the rest of the thread and find the facts. The post you mention has arrows that are less than 2 inches long on them. Since you go both ways at that fork in the trail, depending on what point in the race you are at, there are arrows AND chalk pointing in BOTH directions. It was obviously UCSD meet officials who made the wrong call, despite fans, the lead biker and several runners TRYING to go the right direction. WWU went because they are fit and the fact that they "went out dumb" and still kicked your ass after 16k of racing shows that they wouldn't have died that bad in the first race and would have gone regardless. People who went out harder the first time WERE more disadvantaged, and teams who are pussys and don't train sufficiently for a 10k and then try to run an 8k and hang on at championship races WERE disadvantaged. The fitter and smarter people went. Your points are pointless. UCSD sucks at meet hosting. Their course sucks for any large race. Their program sucks at preparing runners to compete over 10k at the end of the season (aka whenever it actually matters).

Alright look, there is a difference between running dumb and then running your own race. While Scott Bauhs may have a much faster 10k PR on the track, it is not like he is going out and shooting for a 27:48!

Jordan stated that he was out there running his own race and felt great doing it? Would he have fallen off pace? Maybe. Would Bauhs have won the race anyway? Most likely. The fact is that he was completely aware of what he was doing, and it isn't like he was going to all of a sudden slow down upon the realization that he is ahead of Bauhs and let him go ahead. Not one person on that team was "running dumb"

You call out people for complaining immediately after essentially complaining about how the 2nd race favored WWU the most, and if not for that they would never have made nationals. The WWU team is incredibly talented and deserving of their national berth, and all the 2nd race did was prove that. Every single runner out in that field was faced with the same challenges.

See just proves the point more. In no way do I think any of the programs, not WWU not AAU are bad programs and to get on the internet and start posting things like this is wrong, thats the whole point of it, yah people are pissed off but you dont go blame other people. See that when people need to shut up. I never said the whole WWU team was going out dumb, I said that going out in front of someone who has proved time after time after time he is fast is dumb. I'm sorry if the made you mad but the fact is I believe Bauhs is a whole lot better, and on a really unforgiving cross country course, I love to see other teams go out hard on this course because if you have watched ANY of the other races ran on this 10k course you'd realize that they can hold on for about 6k and then they start coming back fast. Any runner should know that. I dont think he should of turned around and let Bauhs pass him I just think that he was digging himself into a hole that would of made him not have as good of a race as he is capable of. And on that it was much closer the first race then it was the second race and if he didnt preform as well as he should of that it would leave WWU open.All that is being said is that it was obvious that WWU race alot different tacitly the first time then they did the second time and I think the tactics they where using was not smart ones on this course and they saw that obviously that if they approached it differently that theyd do better and then they went and did that in the second race. I think WWU is talented and given everything deserve to go to nationals but I'm saying I think things would of been alot different if the first race never had stopped.

And second this is what Im getting at, everyone saying all this bs about people running the meet wrong, insulting people and just being rude is wrong. Its one thing to get on the internet and say someone was running a dumb race, because everyone has and it isnt saying that they are a bad runner or that their program bad. But to go on there and insult coaches runners and staff is wrong. Alot of schools handled it nicely and the right way, but alot of school showed unsportsmen like conduct by insulting San Diego runners, stuff and fans. Both on the day of the race and now still on the internet. Its dumb that people got lost and it is even dumber that people kept going the wrong way after they realized they went to wrong way. In addition to all the maps signs and chalk out there, there was a video showing you the course and even showing you that turn on the UCSD website.

But still probably even after this post explaining even more what I am saying there will still be disrespectful rude insults at UCSD. I just cant see how that is good sportsmanship and is allowed. I hope something like this happens to all the programs that have been saying all this stuff so that they can take a step back and realize that shit happens and theres no need to go and disrespect people.

There is no way the runners can be blamed for this. They are in a REGIONAL race and have enough to worry about. By the way, the course is ridiculously confusing, so saying that you expect the racers to memorize it in two days is stupid. Also, I know that a few runners tried to go the right way, but the crowd rejected them.

You cant blame the runners for this, ad no one person can be blamed. The course was extremely well marked, and all the people were in place to prevent this. Unfortunately, all of the "fail-safes" failed at the same time, and human error is to blame.

In the end, I think the best teams prevailed. Good teams can win, no matter the circumstances, and I think this helped to choose the absolute fastest teams to represent the West at nationals.

If there had been no course mishap and the 1st race went according to plan, the top 3 teams would still have been the same. The only change would have been the amount of points each team scored.

No see you can't say that because it affected every runner and every team differently. And you can't judge it off off where people were at the turn. I think it would of turned out different, and I know for sure it would of been alot closer then it was. Maybe it would of been the same but in my opinion it wouldn't of at all.

I agree, it would have been alot closer than it was. WWU would have been closer to Alaska but still 3rd, with Alaska 2nd with less points because their 5 man doesn't pass out towards the end of the race. Chico still wins. The top 3 teams would still have been the same. I wouldn't call on any concrete evidence but if you watched that flotrack video, albeit only 2 miles in, Alaska, Chico and WWU are the top 3 teams, respectively. The order of the finish in the 2nd race was Chico, Alaska, WWU.

I think UCSD gets better than 7th, but does not nip top 3; the 2nd race certainly didn't help them, just like it didn't help anybody, but it showed that UCSD was not fit enough as a team to handle the workload, and therefore would not likely have had the resources to crack the top 3 even if there had been no problems in the 1st race.

What is the purpose of you posting? To insult runners from others schools for having courage to race hard and then say that others are mean for pointing ou that UCSD screwed up big time? What?

You make no sense. Let me repeat this. You are mad at people for insulting UCSD and then you go out and knock on a guy for running a race? Are you kidding me? You are the one who needs to "Shut the F up".

What did the WWU runner do? He ran a courageous race, actually two courageous races. He wasn't running way too fast that first time. He certainly wasn't over extended. If you think he was, you obviously know nothing about running. Would he have died a little? Yeah probably, but not a ton. I bet that he would have finished third behind Bauhs and Cheseto had the first race not have been screwed up.

What did UCSD do? They screwed up the most important race of the year for the majority of teams involved. Their one task was to put on a 10k race. AND THEY SCREWED IT UP! If you cannot act like a mature adult and live up to your mistakes I don't know what to say. You screwed up. Live with it. Quit blaming others or trying to deflect the attention (and saying that the runners ran off course instead of being led off course when the turned was blocked!). Apologize for your mistakes and do what is necessary to make sure that such a situation will never happen again.

From my understanding the flagging was stretched across the intersection where the turn was supposed to be made and if this is the case it would have been even tougher for the lead runners to recognize or know that they needed to turn there.. First the lead bike is going straight, then the turn is flagged off to boot! You can't blame the athletes.

As for Welling's leading that's not a big deal. It was obvious that Bauhs and Chessetto were keying off each other and Bauhs was just starting to move into position to catch Welling when everything fell apart on the course. It wasn't that Welling went out too fast as much as Bauhs just hadn't started to race yet.

ucsd did an awesome job setting up the course. It was chalked the whole way, there were flags guiding the runners at any part where there was more than one way to go, and there was course monitors with bright yellow shirts at almost every turn. At the part where the runners were supposed to turn, there was chalk telling them to tun, but there was also chalk arrows pointing straight, because the runners go through two more times, and go straight instead of turning. there was a post saying to turn, but its too small to spot and read while you are in the middle of a race, plus it was blocked by fans standing at the turn. There was also flags at the turn, and this is where the mistake happened. The flags were in position for the 2nd and 3rd time the runners pass there, when they go straight instead of turning. They were blocking the turn instead of being switched to block the runners from going straight. So there was fans blocking the turn, but they were behind the misplaced flags.

The bottom line is the course monitor at that turn didnt move the flags, and didnt move the fans in the way. It sucks that UCSD did such a good job of preparing the course and one person didnt do there job and ruined it for everyone.
