several of my boys wear half tights under their uniform shorts (which are essentially a basketball short picked by our head coach). We have only had 2 days this season with temps over 55. Most of our meets have been in the low 40's and raining, so I guess the extra warmth is a good thing and the ridiculously long uniform shorts cover them anyway. The kids rebel at the thought of short shorts and I go with 4 inch inseams for cross. In terms of fashion and function, the most comfortable short I have worn for cool weather (female) is the adidas wildwood. it has some little spandex long boy shorts under a regular short, good warmth, no chafe. but you can't really see the spandex undershort. perhaps someone needs to invent something like that for guys?

I am absolutely not going to read through this entire thread, so please accept my apology if this has been mentioned already, but...
I would say, conservatively, that of the several hundred world class runners currently training in Iten, Kenya, probably 4 or 5 wear running shorts on a regular basis. The rest wear tights and pants for runs, and half tights for harder efforts.
Not sure where this information leaves all you mongoloids, but I guess it's cool to tell guys with 10k prs 5 or 6 minutes faster than you what's fashionable for training and racing.

i ran those times in college a few years ago.
i never run with 1/2 tights under shorts--only said that it's acceptable if 1) someone is too cold or 2) they have an injury. then IF you decide you MUST wear half tights, i propose you must wear something over them. otherwise go with full tights, or running shorts.
i never said anything about sprinters wearing half tights or whatever those 1 piece suits are. that's their thing. nor did i say anything about full length tights (till just now). those are totally appropriate when it's cold.
you can make all the excuses you want, but the fact is, deep down we all know half tights look stupid as hell on a skinny little distance runner.
this is nothing like a mis-matched sweatshirt. it is more like a thick sweatshirt tucked into the jeans kind of thing--totally unacceptable.

Well, the verdict's in: split shorts are the way to go!
Reason: 99.9999999% of females I have heard comment on the matter prefer splits over half-tights, saying that the former is "hot" and the latter is "atrocious".
Also, nearly all females who have posted on this thread have voted in favour of split shorts.

No one looks god in them but they are ok in training. STILL RACING SHOULD BE DONE IN REGULARE SHORTS
