PS - I'm going to be in London - if I want to cheer Fasil on, do I pronounce it like "basil" or like "dazzle" or like "nozzle" (with an F at the beginning, obviously).
Thanks

Here is the direct link to the article Biz mentioned a few posts ago...I sent it in to Wejo, but don't know if it will make the front page - so here it is!

Can you tell us anything about his training for the past 6 months?
Wait - I feel like a fool - I bet it's Bah-seel (or Bah-zeel), pronounced more slowly and delicately than those sample words...am I right?

Fasil's Name is pronounced like
Fa (as in the Fa in Fantastic)
and Seal (as in an overhyped singer married to some hot chick)
His name interestingly comes from King Fasiledes of Ethiopia, Emperor of Ethiopia during the early 17th Century and builder of King Fasil's Castle in Gondar, Ethiopia (where my parents are from)..Fasil was born in Germany in 1980 and immigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1981.....He went to Arizona State University and got a degree in Chemical Engineering...he shelved the desk job for some spikes and is rolling the dice to see if Beijing is in his future
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasil
I just got off the phone with Fasil..and I'm running late to the airport like usual...He is hyped to run...and is surprised that this thread is going this long....he also didn't like the fact that I had doubted his ability to run sub 2:10, but you never know in a marathon. Two 1:02 halves in the Fall at Dallas White Rock and in January at Houston have really built his confidence......
Here is link to his myspace page with info about his recent races etc....a little cheezy....but if you know him...you would understand....

I'll like to answer this...but I'm running late...more entertaining way to find out is off his blog on the right side of this page...

Can someone find the next flight to London from Charlotte...I'm probably gonna need it...

Not posting my real email address, but you can bank on it that I won't guess again. If I win, give the $$ to a local youth track club.

I talk to Fasil once a month and I'm still number 4 on his myspace list. Respect. We'll all be following the race live on the Internet.
But the real question is not how fast Fasil will run in London, but why are Americans generally better at Fantasy English Football than our English counterparts? For example (Taken from Butler Past & Present):
1 AFCrocknrollrunners Olly Laws 95 1670
2 FC Phariss Bart Phariss 75 1655
3 Hoosier Daddys Daddy Scott Overall 81 1653
4 gloryleedsunited Brett Gatens 68 1643
5 Up-The-Heath Andy Rayner 83 1633
6 Working Class Heroes Nick Goodliffe 75 1558
7 Erils all stars Andrew Toward 85 1542
8 11 C Ronaldos alex hains 65 1507
9 Butler's Finest Gary Blackman 50 1117
With 7 Englishmen and 2 Americans in the league, we should not be sitting 2 and 4 on the table. With only shotty Internet reports to guide me, why am I better than Overall, Raynor, Goodliffe, Toward, Hains, and Blackman? Isn't this your sport? And your league? Olly, you're going down.
Enough shit talking for now. I'll see you in November...United for the treble!
Bart
Flew in to London today...Fasil graciously arranged a ride from airport.....no...not really...but we've been hanging out. Saw press conference with Baldini,Geb,Tergat,Limo....There is a slight worry about the weather being slightly above normal for the time here...Baldini did not seem bothered by the heat, though. I spoke to Limo for a short time with Fasil. The guy seems like a cool guy....Afterwards, Fasil and I went to the track to do easy workout 2X mile at 4:40 and some 67 quarters...Of course I did not participate in this because I did not want to embarrass Fasil prior to his Marathon...I gotta say the London Marathon runs like a well-oiled machine...
The excitement about this race is palpable around here...
Some friends come in tomorrow and I'm gonna go to a different hotel, because my nights in London might be a little later than Fasil's...
Cheerio to you all, will check back later..
Fasil thanks y'all for supporting him, or for simply trying to win $50, either way, we hope you follow the London Marathon...and support the 5 elite americans in the men's field...

”9 minute PR…….”,….. I would think that this might be optimistic…in fact, Our mom might find this time optimistic… I hope you are right, but In fact I think that many of the guesses are skewed to the optimistic end…..I guess that it might be reasonable to skew to the faster times as you are responding to the runner’s brother, but, give your best guess…not best possible scenario guess….

I now suspect a likely clustering of guesses around the guy from MIT as everyone will assume that he got his guess by using a statistical algorithm that plugs in hieght, weight, vital statistics, PRs, prerace diet, climate, # of times getting laid in the past year (Fasil might hurt in this department) and figured a time based on this statistical algorithm………Thanks for the support!

If I win, send the $50 to the track coach at Ben Davis so a needy HS kid can get a pair of shoes. I ran with your old HS coach when I was at IU, and I know someone at your alma mater could use the help - as could any HS. Tall ya what, if I win, I'll match the donation.---great idea

Thanks for support. Shots out to everyone in our hometown of Indianapolis, especially Ben Davis High School! I still own the Columbus East high school course record (the only one that Fasil did not break)…granted it was a dual meet in the middle of nowhere…but I still got it and noone can take that away from me…I’m pathetic

I was a Senior when Biz was a freshman. I remember the schools around Indianapolis always had huge fast teams. Ben Davis, Carmel, etc...and a huge fanbase. The noise at State Cross was deafening. We had 3 regulars on the Clarksville team that year, a small school in the southern part of the state. I don't think we ever had more than 7 runners on a team in the 4 years I was there.
Anyway, I remember in the 3200m that year Biz and some big tall guy running in basketball shorts were duking it out. I led for about 200m during the 6th lap then proceeded to eat dust, Biz and the tall guy took off around me. With 800m to go we all were still pretty tight, no more than 1-2 seconds accross the group. I fell off, finished in 7th, 10 second back. I remember working it out way back then and I think they ran the last 800m in 2:10, I did it 2:20. I think the guy with basketball shorts was able to nip Biz in the end. It's great to see old school Indiana dudes still running well. Most of us are just getting and slow...:)
