Actually, I believe the 7:08.0 is a converted mark. If it is, the 7:08.0 isn't "intrinsically" superior to ASU's 7:08.96, but it is, through mathematical gymnastics, extrinsically superior.
A tangential point is that the HS federations that don't recognize the intrinsically superior two-mile records as 3200 records, are the same people who are teaching the future generation. Scary.

Well, the day after the Penn DMR I was jogging to the start of the 4x8 and severely sprained my ankle. I was in a cast for a month and was really never able to recover that year. Oh well, things happen.
In terms of the 2-mile relay vs. the 3200-m relay: Well, I think it is nuts, but oh well, it was all fun at the time.

Chicago TC time was converted from two miles but several hours of Google work didn't determine what their actual time was and what the conversion factor was and who converted it.
But splits for 880 yards add up to 7:10.4, so I guess somebody decided 2.4 seconds is the right conversion factor??
T&FN goes with .994194, but that would convert to 7:07.9, not 7:08.0
Anyway, if Chicago TC ran 7:10.4 and Arizona State ran below that - even for a shorter race - both would officially be listed as American records, which is apparently what happened.

I was running a 800m leg on another DMR team as Haley ran his leg at Penn in 87 and here is what I can add to the forum.
1- It was very cold.
2- It was raining.
3- From that day on he would be addressed a Mr. Roddie "Rocket" Haley to the rest of the competitors!

- I will agree with that... I was showing the video of the race (have it on DVD now) to a friend and the 44 was very impressive! Don't forget, Miles Irish ran a 1:46 flat as well! Yes, it was cold and raining but it was a great day to run fast?

It snowed that year. I remember putting pam cooking spray on my spikes before the race to keep the snow from sticking to the bottoms.
