Yep, look at how many guys throw 100mph now. Every team has multiple guys that can do it whereas in the 90's there were maybe 2 in all of mlb and most starters sat high 80s.

from my humble opinion, the blue print is out on how to be great at whatever you meant to be good at.
for these high school runners, they have not only taken the bad things out of their daily routine and added many great things.
if you took a 24 hour snap shot of how a great high school athlete from years ago and compared it to todays, we would see a dramatic difference.
sure the shoes are faster, but it is what they are doing from the time they wake up u til the time they to bed. oh…..and what is happening during the hours they SLEEP, it all makes sense.
- Training improves. US distance running in the 90s was in a terrible state as competition (Africans) got way better and Americans didn't. The US training system I think wasn't particularly good, lots of hard anaerobic workouts that for too long during the season and not enough endurance building. Africans came to dominate mid-d and distance running with huge aerobic bases. I think since they American training has switched to develop more endurance and therefore much faster runners.
- Belief. Some barriers are mental. Before Bannister people illogically thought someone would die if they broke a 4 minute mile. A decade later HSers were doing it. By 2000 people thought Americans could no longer compete against Africans, then Webb comes along with a 3:53 in HS (even on that lots of hard anaerobic work and less base building training..I should know, he was a teammate of mine) and shows we can compete. Kids coming up starting to run in the years after that saw the legendary Webb and realized they can start running faster than kids had been running before that.
- Obviously shoes. Times across the board have improved a ton since late last decade when super shoes and super spikes started being made. We'd be seeing much fewer crazy performances, and the top performances would not be nearly as good, from HS to pro running, without super shoes.
- Bouncier tracks for those that have been replaced lately add even a little bit more on top of the shoes.
- I guess bicarb also helps for those who take it.
- Also I think probably pro runners are marrying more. Running became a professional sport just like two generations ago, so I'd say in the past 20-30 years more really fast men and women starting marrying each other and passing on a desire to run to their kids. This of course only applies in certain situations, but we know of course of some examples of top runners these days being the kids of two pro runners.
Mostly it's better training combined with the belief that anyone can compete with Africans, that have allowed non-Africans to catch up to Africans, and then the super shoes have improved performances significantly across the board, which is why we are seeing crazy times, and many more people running what used to be top times, across the board at all levels.
Gunder Hägg ran 4,01 in the mid 1940s, so absolutely nobody thought they were going to die if they ran 2 seconds faster - or that it was impossible. The reason why it took so long was because while Hägg was improving the records the rest of the world was fighting ww2 and we had to wait for the next generation of mid-distance runners before people started to break 4 regularly.
Hägg was a groundbreaker because he was one of the first runners to train hard year round. In the 1950s everybody did.

They believe they can compete with the africans because theyre now taking the same drugs that the africans are on.Its not rocket science. The rest of the world has been playing catchup, and not in a good way. If you cant beat them, join them.No amount of changes in training can bring clean athletes up to the level of mass doped, altitude trained runners. Its completely impossible.

I can't tell if you're a fantasist or a troll? 🤔
Im neither. Im correct, and thats all that matters.

You must lead a very sad life to actually believe that every good HS athlete is doping.
I live a wonderful life, but thanks for being concerned for my well being. Especially as i havent thought of you,at all.And no i didnt say all good HS athletes dope, although some are. I was actually talking about top athletes in westernised nations who are doping,to compete with the africans. Most high schoolers arent at that level.

Nope. You're definitely wrong.🤡
Well actually im not,but im not about to enlighten you. My opinion is different to yours and i wont change my mind. One day when it all comes out in the open ,youll have egg on your face, and i wont . . Have a nice day.

Then you are in the wrong thread. This is about HS athletes, move on to the 50 other threads about doping.

Oh, did it happen from one year to the next? Or did it take a few decades?
Answer is simple: Parents and Coaches are more involved in training lifecycle earlier in their lives. This has happened with Jane, the Youngs, and the Sahlmans for instance.
Just to give an example, Jane's younger sister, has been training/racing since Elementary school. Then, in middle school, she raced against lower-level HS kids at highschool meets before graduating to top-level HS kids in Utah (As a 7th grader!). It's all a gradual progression that most kids are not afforded (unless you are in John Hedegren's new youth program).
Don't let the stats fool you though, there are still PLENTY of kids who are just your norm 4:30 milers who train and live like all 4:30 milers ever did. There are still 5:00 milers who train and live like all 5:00 milers ever did.
What do you mean - "more involved?" Like stage mothers? A lot of kids in the past ran because that's what kids often do - except in increasingly sedentary societies. They didn't need to start training like pros from the age of 10 - and in fact that has been shown to be harmful to their physical development at that age. A lot of great runners of the past didn't take the sport up till their late teens. It didn't need "more involved" parents and coaches for them to reach the top of the sport. It still doesn't.

The fantasists are those who can't see what is in front of them, that has been part of the sport for decades.
