Something similar happened in Monaco 1500m 2020 when the pacer went out in like 53/58 for the first 800. Idr if they had the lights though
Hey now Laros are in front lets go Laros
First lap in that 1500 was a high 52
Tim should have run 3:26.x that day if they didn't go through the first lap that fast
tRUE, BUT also tim needs to be able to control himself. Jakob running out of control would be a mid to high 54. you have to have sort of internal gauge.
It was pure arrogance to think he could run such a talented field into the ground in a championship race.
Yes, that is partly arrogance for sure. But it is also partly a plan that just didn't work. He didn't want it to turn into a Centro-style kickfest, so he took everyone through in a pace that should have wiped out their finishing speed
The fact that it didn't work means Jakob lost, but it was still a "plan" and not just stupidity.
Super impressive run from Laros there. Taking down some of Ethiopia's best in an off event is no easy feat!
More bad news for Jakob. Laros has leveled up. Tim seemed to be training step for step with him, too as opposed to being injured all of last winter. The 1500 field keeps getting better.
So I rarely criticize Hoppel - mostly because he is really sound with his tactics, but that was not a great one.
I think he was definitely over-hyped to get back that AR from Hoey but that got the best of him - he was out way too hard there - the difference between his opening 200 and his second 200 must have been at least a second and a half (just looking at where he was in relation to the lights). 1.44.98 is an okay result by his standard but that wasn't what he was after on so many levels I feel.

Jakob just about equaled Laros's 1500 pb indoors by himself. Not sure this qualifies as bad news.
Grant Holloway hasn't really felt like his usual explosive self so far this year. Maybe a start of a downward swing or maybe it's just too early in the season for me to tell where he's at quite yet. But he usually starts off seasons so hot in the 7.3s.

It used to be 1-2 guys who would get to the 3:27 fitness needed to beat Jakob. 1 in 2021 (who frontran), 1 in 2022, 2 in 2023 (Yared was sick), 3 in 2024 (all beat him in Paris). Now, what is bad news is that while there is plenty of time to come, Laros could join the 3 from last year as could a healthy Tim. I'm not saying he or Hobbs will get there, but the potential is also there.
The good news for Jakob is he is healthy and ahead of last year. The bad news is he got to 7:17 shape last year by Paris, so fitness was not the problem. It's the competition and his tactics/execution.

Great run by Jakob. Clearly a level above everybody else when it comes to paced, lights-aided time trials. But let's not extrapolate from these fantastic races to a championship race without pacers or lights. When he needs to do the work, there are others close enough to beat him as we saw last year. He was 4th, and that's with Laros injured for a big chunk of the year. He may well have a year with 8 or 9 straight wins in DL and other meets, maybe even the WR in the 1500, and yet finish out of the medals again.

A nearly healthy Tim was bad news as he helped bridge the gap up to Jakob, but a fully healthy means someones up for setting up a fast race. Would be interesting to see how it looks like when Jakob is not the pacer in a championship final, against the current competitors.
