My first car was a 1998 Subaru Legacy (a wagon, not a sedan), which I drove from 2015-2018. It lasted until about 235k miles, at which point some overheating issue damaged the engine and radiator. In that time frame I think I drove about 10–12k miles. The only other issue I had with this car was when I left the lights on and the battery died and a starter (which the previous owner said was gonna go soon).
This is just to say I had a great experience with a particular Subaru, so I can see why some would really like them and recommend them to others.
I recall my dad, who knows a great deal about cars as a consumer/operator, telling me something along the lines of “Subarus made between 96 and 06 are indestructible”, which is likely where their reputation for reliability comes from.
