I think the reality is that in this sport it clearly helps to have coaches that know the drill in how to develop competitive pro runners, which includes knowledge of all the "help" that successful pro runners engage in.
Not True! Not all talented runners have the discipline to train as hard as KT. Even at NC State her peers were in awe of her obsession in pushing hard in training. In HS she stated that she looks forward to her daily training routine that starts at 4:30 am. How many HS runners do you know that do that?
Can you name an elite American distance runner that leaves something on the table, by not training hard enough? How hard her teammates at NC State might have trained, doesn’t matter.
One of the elite runners that made these comments about KT at State is a NCAA 5K champion, has gone sub 15 and happens to be her coach’s daughter, Elly Henes.
It is unfortunate because it means that Tuohy has less upside than her peers. We all knee that she trains very hard. Runners like Schweizer and Monson and Valby all developed more slowly. They made huge jumps in college and had huge upside after.
All elite runners train hard to reach their full potential, and none take shortcuts. Self-discovery? What?

If what you say is true…that she trains harder than everyone else, not only does it help explain her injury history, but suggests she may be close to her ceiling, unless she does what astro os suggesting.
I accuse runners when there is plainly a reason to accuse them. This is a doping sport. Deal with it. And that applies to top US pros and their typical pro progression arcs. Whether a runner suddenly has an epiphany at 26 or 29 or whatever does not bother me. That is the way the game is played. My concern for Tuohy is that she is too well adjusted or ethical to play this game and will watch less talented runners surpass her.

All possible overtraining does is increase the chance of injury. It doesn’t result in someone out performing their talent and physical maturation.
Why train if it doesn't make you faster? You think Tuohy would run 15:0x if she was running 20MPW?
That’s not what I said. Other posters have claimed she out trains other elite runners and it results in her being closer to her ceiling, but that’s not possible and if it was, everyone would do it.

Maybe true. But for every Schweitzer and Monson, there are hundreds of other talented runners who would wonder what ifs only after they cruise through their primes.
Training hard doesn’t limit your upside. Everyone is different and some athletes just tolerate hard training better than others. Despite recent issues, KT has benefited from a relatively injury free career, especially compared to Valby and others that may tolerate hard workouts less. Her upside looks just fine. Her progression is fairly constant compared to others.

In other words if you look at this analytically KT has very few flat spots or sudden spikes, with a relatively linear progression over the years.
You said it again. If I run 100 MPW and hit 14:00 and you run 25 MPW and hit 14:00, I am closer to my ceiling. That is why people train.
Distance runners train primarily by running. Cross training, core, flexibility and other activities may complement the primary type of training. This has been tested over the years. Just ask the Kenyans what their MPW routine is and plot against their outcomes, This isn’t rocket science.

Quite the opposite. Just addressed on another thread. A HUGE spike 18 months ago that just came out of nowhere followed by a complete downward spiral that has lasted 18 months.
27 participants in women's Olympics 10000. Got a guess where Valby will finish? My guess is top 10. Being accustomed to Gainesville weather should benefit her. Paris is most likely going to be hot and humid.
Drivel. Oh and her "downward spiral" included running 15:03 and placing 7th and the trials. Let's see. She broke multiple national record in high school. Broke the US U20 3000m record, and broke the collegiate mile and 3000m record. Yep. Out of nowhere. LOL.
