How can somebody break records if they are not running? The odds of those two being out of T&F are better than the odds they will be breaking records next year.

I agree. It seemed strange when Bobby moved the best woman's 400/800 runner to 800/1500, then took the best woman's 400m Hurdles runner and turned her into a 400m flat runner. Then neither seems to want to run in the WC. Very, very questionable.

I love both Sydney & Athing, but think they need new coach(es).

Yes, look at her when she was circa 18 vs now. Huge jaw in comparison and a much harder face. That doesn’t just happen in a few years..

I was a huge fan of Mu and SML. Now I'm kind of hoping they lose in Paris. It's like: "Serves 'em right Try competing some time!"

very suspicious, and now the Kersee shenanigans are bad for T&F popularity as it is a joke these top athletes not competing,,,,,if you are hurt you dont announce that you are running the Brussels DL race a day ago......a joke.

Maybe running for Kersee takes all the joy out it for them. Money aside, all the hard work, sacrifice etc needs to be justified more often by competing, and enjoying the life of a world travelling, elite, T&F athlete and the perks and success you worked your ass off for.

As a guy who was a middle distance runner and did a brief spell playing soccer at a D1 school, I cannot understand how a top-class elite runner does not want to compete. In soccer and track I always wanted more competition to raise my level. Still do despite being 40 years old. What is the deal?

I don't even have motivation to run regularly when there's no race or goal time on the horizon, it's just too much exertion. The competition and pursuit of a goal was always the reason for me and I imagine most professionals as well.

Why are these WR-level paid elites opting to not race, the most fun/exciting/compelling/challenging/fulfilling part of the sport?

Don't they WANT to race versus train alone for 12-16 months and not test themselves?

Running a bunch of races does not seem to affect sprint training negatively. So, it's particularly surprising when a sprinter skips everything but trials and champs and publicly expresses a distaste for competition, as McLaughlin did last year. I'll be shocked if she actually runs her event in Brussels."

My view on the thread about the Brussels announcement was pretty much identical to the consensus on that thread, that we'd believe she'd compete when we saw it. Whether announcing injury or some other reason, it was anticipated that she would not run.

Wow, this poster got it first! It's called ducking the competition when everything in your preparations aren't perfect. Suck it up and race! The Olympics are a year away!!!!!!!!

I've been saying it for a long time now... there is a reason the coach doesn't want those 2 racing much

Lord coe needs to have a conversation with Bobby Kersee and let him know he is not pleased. Coe is not without power.

Pat Beverly said that in his estimation 50% of NBA players don't love basketball. It's just their job and most have been pushed into it since they were very young. You can have all the natural talent in the world and achieve at a very high level... but without the love for the sport you'll never reach that level of 'all time great.'

I think the same probably applies to any pro athlete. It's a job and they've been devoted to it for their entire life. It's hard to remain passionate about anything when it's all you've known for so long. That what makes the greats special.. MJ, Lebron, Tiger, Brady, etc. They're not just insanely talented but they have an obsession with the sport itself and squeezing every single bit of performance out of themself they can.

Sydney I think has shown she has that desire and has the accomplishments to back it up. Mu? Not so much. Which makes what Mu has done all the more remarkable and all the more tragic that we maybe have witnessed her peak already.
