Yes, the cut off for the category of adult is completely arbitrary, I agree with you there. One person may be mature enough at 17 years 11 months and one might not be, etc. Age of consent is 16 where I live. However, I think we can both agree that the outrage here is because of her age, nothing else, and I think we can also both agree that they are both adults, i.e. they can do what they want regarding relationships. It would be different if one was not an adult. One could be 20 and one could be 90 and that would be OK, whereas if one was 14 and one was 24 it isn't OK (IMO). It isn't the gap per se, it's the maturity of the two people involved. There is still a difference between a 19 year old and a 48 year old but I don't think it's immoral as some people seem to think.

That's not to say I don't think the DiCaprio situation isn't odd (especially with the pattern), but I simply don't buy the rationale for the degree of outrage, especially when you see it extend down to far smaller age gaps. Is a 30 year old dating a 20 year old that weird? A 24 year old and a 35 year old? What about people of the same age with vastly different incomes?

When I was 20 I casually dated a 31 year old woman. At 23 I fooled around with a 33 year old who was a hotshot barrister in The City. I didn't really spare much thought to the age gaps or power dynamics - I met them in bars / on holiday and they were attractive and interesting.

I also think people habitually downplay how much experience a 20 year old can have. At that age I'd had 3 relationships lasting 6-18 months, multiple casual FWB situations / one night stands, firmly established tastes and interests - which I could talk about extensively, had lived on my own, paid bills, travelled etc.

These 19 year old models, by nature of their work, aren't exactly on the normal trajectory for a young adult, either.

I remember when Newsweek was an actual legitimate weekly magazine. What drivel to puke up a post about the comments about the relationship of DiCaprio. The woman is gorgeous. They run in the same circles. He is not using power over her or any young model. Maybe he is an immature person. Maybe she is mature and they have great conversations. I would enjoy meeting these women. I imagine if I was DiCaprio I would have the confidence to overcome that age difference. Both consenting adults, move along.

Yep. That is for sure true. Yes, some young women don't like mostly immature men their same age which is why many of them might look even just a couple years older to find a life partner, BUT when we're talking a 20 or 30 year difference, and the man happens to be wealthy...well, that's the only reason.
