There are actually very good reasons why you cannot run in someone else's bib. Grow up
You live in the most litigious society in the world, that's a start.
This problem has existed as long as races have existed. Races should establish official transfer systems. They could even monetize it. The fact that Houston has stubbornly refused to do so doesn't increase my interest in persecuting some rando d-bag hobbyjogger who ran a respectable marathon by d-bag hobbyjogger standards and doesn't even get credit for it in the official race results.
There is a place for all that info on the back of most race bibs.
The risk calculated by insurance companies isn't going to change with one runner switching out a bib with another runner.
Do you have multiple examples for these incidents happening? There are millions of race finishes each year in the US. Surely, if this is a problem, examples are in the 100s.

HOWEVER, having correct participant information is important in emergency situations. You're purposely being dense if you're going to argue this.
He was probably carrying an ID and was very obviously carrying a smartphone full of personal information. It's not as if you need the info on a race bib to quickly determine who he is in an emergency situation or any situation. And realistically, what percentage of race participants do you think actually fill in the emergency contact info on their bib? 10%? 5%? 2%? Less?
Most events SHOULD allow transfers. Whether they do or not is another question.
Unless this guy was deliberately trying to falsely qualify a friend for Boston, this is a non-story. I have lost hundreds of dollars of marathon race entry fees after getting a severe sinus infection last year and a IT band injury this year and am fed up. His buddy probably wasn't able to run for some reason and gave him the bib to save him a couple hundred bucks. A victimless crime and definitely not worthy of a marathoninvestigation article. Just give me a break.
I disagree that bib transfers should always be allowed. Sure, it would be nice, but it does come at an administrative cost, so all else equal, adding this feature can make race entry fees more expensive.
They could create an official mechanism and charge a fee that more than covers the cost. This is ridiculous.
Sharing a bib might not seem like a big deal. But what if it's done to qualify for Boston, NYC or Olympic trials? Someone honest gets robbed of their rightfully earned chance. What if that's you or your friend?
What if it's done to set a (local, state) record in the wrong age group or gender and it's your record that's erased?
What if it bumps you out of an age group or masters award? You might not care, but some people would and that's their right.
Add to that the fact that there's no real reason anyone needs to borrow a bib.
Sign up yourself. Is it that hard?
FWIW I think a young man accepting an award in the masters women's division, or somebody who did not run actually registering for Boston (or the Olympic Trials!) based on the performance of somebody who ran with their bib, is a fundamentally different kind of problem than Person A gifting their bib to Person B and Person B accepting it for no other purpose than to allow Person B to participate in the race.

What's more annoying than him using someone else's bib is how f'ing ridiculous it is that he had someone bike along apparently most of the marathon course filming him. I feel sorry for anyone who was stuck running around him. He HAD to have been so god damn obnoxious the whole race. lol
The thing is an actual fast person's content could be just as relatable and more compelling from the hobby/personal fitness standpoint.
The difference is the amount of effort one is willing to commit to the "influencer" aspect. There's only so much time and energy one can devote to training and earning a living. Would you rather train for an OTQ while working as a teacher (etc.) with guaranteed salary, benefits (including comprehensive health insurance), and generous vacation time, or try the "influencer" route where there's no guaranteed income or benefits?
I'm slightly baffled that folks like Seth Demoor and Matt Choi can allegedly hire editors to produce their content and still eek out a living wage.
It's amazing that there are so many that are influenced enough by a DB 2:58 marathoner to pay him 1K to coach them. Plenty of stupids out there.
They either don't know better or they want a coach who tells them you're doing great. He probably has scripts that automatically email hi fives, you're amazing, messages. So many young people these days are such snowflakes.

I will absolutely not have any diminished thoughts about a person's time on the clock based on them not signing up and using a friend's bib who did sign up but can't/isn't running. So what.
The time on the clock is what it is. That's not the issue. He could have run a strava sub-3 hr marathon and it would be the same. But to try to make it "official" by borrowing a bib then posting that on social medial so the official time is now disqualified and unofficial, makes no sense. Why bother?
No I don't agree that a solo run where your watch/Strava says 26.2 is the same as running a certified marathon course with someone else's bib and getting DQ'd.

It's more about insurance purposes. If he gets seriously injured during the race, the race insurance will not cover him because he never agreed to the waiver. He then sues the Houston Half, etc..
And people wonder why race registrations keep going up? Insurance for these races is not cheap, ask any RD.
