But Danny White seems to believe that keeping the Tennessee brand in the spotlight in multiple sports is good for the revenue driving sports, which may be true. When Florida football was on top, Florida was good at pretty much everything. Alabama has been good at pretty much everything for a while now. And... kind of shockingly, Alabama's academic ranks have risen with their athletics fame. Take a look at the USNews law school rankings. Why is Bama that high? Florida's academic rankings jumped in the 90's with the athletic success. It's probably not a secret that athletics is a great advertisement for a school, and increased applications for admissions means a better student body and more success on the academic front too. So, if Tennessee is following that playbook, it's not contrary to an academic focus. It supports the academics.
Plus... anybody who wants to be an aerospace engineer would probably be better off at Tennessee than ND. There are other similar programs. An English degree from Tennessee is trash, but there are good programs. Architecture, journalism, and so forth.
Yeah I think people are underselling the outlook of a UT degree. I know many very successful people that graduated from UT. All depends on the program you choose.
Tell that to Zach Long who is from Knoxville and chose Tennessee over Ole Miss and is now the school record holder at 5K.
Zach Long is from Grainger…. He’s not from Knoxville, sorry.
Grainger is 25 minutes from Knoxville. It’s basically Knoxville. I had it typed out that he was from Grainger but decided to say Knoxville for simplicity purposes since most on here don’t know anything about Knoxville geography.
The only good athlete Tennessee had under the former coach. If I remember correctly, he won one of those big meets out West and beat Tyler Day during it.

The only good athlete? I didn’t know who he was. But didn’t Blaase and Seymour run well at UT? Blaase almost broke 32 minutes if I remember right.

I meant mens since I referenced him when we were talking about locals staying to run for UT. I should have clarified. Blaase ran 32:08, she was a stud. She was also really good before Alford-Sullivan even came so I don’t really attribute Blaase’s success to her. Seymour was a stud too. Those 3 are the only ones.
And the two new recruits are from Nashville, TN and Bristol, VA... which is on the Tennessee and Virginia State Line. Brother is also on the team. Lets try again!
There is no XC page... its' under track. For this analysis, I included mid-distance guys (some of which had a XC seasons listed in their bio). I am going to assume that we include 800 guys in Carlson purview and "distance money" he certainly coached all the 800 guys at ND). If you think they spend money on "a bunch of kids within 150 miles", you haven't been paying attention. BAS loved "buying" a Footlocker Finalist every year and thought she could make it work with 2-3 of those on her roster. Before that, JJ didn't give a lick about in state kids. Sure, there will be some in state or local kids... those are the walk-ons or books kids. You'll get that everywhere. Anyone inside a 150 mile radius that ran decent went elsewhere for college (I included a list of decent runners below that were inside of 150 miles from Knoxville and went elsewhere). Compare the HS PRs for the kids over the last 5 years that lived within 150 and went elsewhere compared to the kids on the team that lived within 150.
The kids in bold are from more than 150 miles away... 14 of 22 kids under Carlson's watch... That's well over half the team from more than 150... and the 2 from VA that you so conveniently pointed out are out of state, but within 150 miles. That's even worse!!!! Those kids have to pay out of state tuition or get that much money taken from scholarship dollars.
Fuji Anday - Murfreesboro (180.2 miles), Canaan Anderson - Murfreesboro (180.2 miles), Riley Buchholz - Beavercreek, OH (306 miles), Alex Crigger 4:17 - Johnson City (120 miles), Will Cronin 4:40 went to Tusculum first - Greeneville, TN (71 miles), Thomas Gardiner - Warwick, NY (699 miles), Georde Goodwyn 4:21 - Knoxville, TN (< 150 miles), Mike Griffin - Wrentham, MA (917 miles), Connor Hawkins 4:16 - Cookeville, TN (102 miles), Kameron Hemlinger - Mechanicsville, VA (438 miles), Will Mazur - Waxhah, NC (245 miles), Matthew McMillan - Brentwood, TN (185 miles), Eli Nahom - New Mildford, CT (786 miles), Devin Sullivan 4:31 - Knoxville, TN (0 miles), Tim Thacker )no times listed in HS, was homeschooled, but went to Milligan first) - Knoxville, TN (0 miles), Karl Thiessen 4:20 - Abingdon, VA (127 miles)
Mid distance: Joe Hoots - Nashville, TN (181 miles), Blake Ewaskey - Doylestown, PA (653 miles), Jakwan Hale - Derby, CT (781 miles), Alex Kay - Ocala, FL (577 miles)
Recruits: Connor Henson - Columbia, TN (219 miles), Isaac Thiessen 4:20 - Abingdon, VA (127 miles)
Good runners over the last 5 years within 150 miles of UT that went elsewhere... don't expand the list to include Nashville/middle TN, because there are TON of decent kids from middle TN that went elsewhere:
Adam Barhard - Georgetown 4:05, Levi Streeval - Lipscomb 4:10, Josh Routh - ETSU 4:12, Jeb Jones - Samford 4:13, Quintin McKinnish - Furman 4:13, Ben Varghese - ETSU 4:13, Chris McElroy - Baylor 4:15, Connor Wingfield - Colorado 4:15, Michael Mansy - NC State 4:17

I would think this is because Sullivan was a terrible coach and recruiter. Who would want to run for a program that has a coach that has qualified 3 people in track distance events and never qualified a team in NCAA XC. Most of those kids flamed out in college and didn’t run fast anyway except for the Varghese kid. For some reason he seems to have quit running too. I have heard that Daniel Boone pushes their kids into the ground in HS. Jury is still out on the 2 kids this year from them. The kid going to Colorado has another thing coming if he thinks he’s going to take a 4:15 mile in there and be on the team. That’s a vanity commitment.

You are right good sir. Don’t forget about some other that lived close to Knoxville and went out of state. Jake Renfree… 4:04 in high school and went out of state. Wesley Pectol 4:09 out of state, Oliver Townsend 4:09 out of state, Brandon Lord 4:09 out of state.
TN is awful at recruiting locally despite the big fan base and phenomenal facilities. Hopefully that changes with Carlson.
Lets not be naïve here, you're listing many athletes from Daniel Boone High School in Gray, TN. A high school which is notorious for burn outs. We should do research on how many of these athletes actually performed in college. The answer is not many. A lot of kids from Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Maryland, and Texas can get in state through the southeast academic common market, Mr. 1500 school record holder! My initial statement was to point out a fair amount of the roster is from relatively close to Knoxville. Add 50 miles by google maps and it adds many of these kids, I was estimating.
I understand what you're attempting to prove but lets dive deeper into some of these athletes-
Here are the college best marks of the athletes you listed! Adam Barnard - Georgetown, Daniel Boone
800- 1:56
1500- 3:50
Josh Routh - ETSU, Daniel Boone
800- 1:55
1500- 3:53

Michael Mansy - NC State, Science Hill
1500- 3:50
5000- 14:24
10000- 31:13
Jake Renfree - Notre Dame, Knoxville Catholic
800- 1:49
1500- 3:43
5000- 13:53
Wes Pectol - Auburn, Greeneville
800- 1:53
1500- 3:48
5000- 14:31
Lets not act like there wasn't a common theme with most of these athletes. There are a couple outliers, but even those outliers have performed poorly in comparison to their high school accolades, such as high school national champions Renfree and Varghese. Varghese has since quit running. Meade was great athlete at Arkansas after four years of injury at Furman.

ND is the #8 aerospace program. Tennessee is 65. Why on earth would you go to UT? I am sure there are some programs where UT is better than ND. Aerospace isn't one of them

You could add Aaron Templeton in there… from Knoxville and didn’t go to UT. 5th at NCs in XC.
My point was about recruiting and where they waste their money. But what “common theme??? I guess your theme is all
kids from east TN never progress in college. Show all the kids from 150 miles that went to TN… how did they progress? Over the last 30 years you got Tony Cosey and Zach Long??? It’s a no win situation. There are not many kids from east TN that went on and had success. Carter Coughlin and Kenton Bachman at Wake both from Knoxville? The only kids TN has developed have been from Michigan or named Anthony Famiglietti.
Egotistical Alum like Williams and Pitcher will never be please no matter the hire. Get over yourselves and support the athletes that are at the school.
