Okay, let's say a mask is 50% effective. If you get exposed twice, your odds of avoiding infection are 0.5^2 = 25%. After 10 times, it's 0.5^10 = 0.1%. In the long term, it does complete f***-all at preventing infection
That is not what the stats mean. Usually, it's "over the study period, those in mask group saw 50% less cases after controlling for xyz" or whatever the study parameters were. It's definitely NOT "a mask cuts the likelihood of a single exposure causing infection from 100% to 50%." How would you even measure that in a rigorous way outside challenge trials?

I am all for mandates being lifted when cases get low. I see no reason to keep them in place 'just in case.' I was merely taking issue with the logic in the original post.
I'm not a big fan of the folks who see restrictions being lifted in many places post Omicron and vaccines and saying "see, they should have done it all along." (Not that Hardloper is but it's a common thread.) A lot has changed in the last year (let alone two) anyone who pretends that a good policy decision now was necessarily a good one last year or vice versa is not thinking.
