It's most similar to body dysmorphia where you think you perceive an aspect of your body to be more flawed or different than it is. The cause of body dysphoria (transgenderism) is however, neurodevelopmental - it occurs when the body develops as one sex and the brain develops as another due to hormonal exposure during development. Look into it, it's actually interesting. I have been reading that the popularization of transgenderism in the media has lead to an "onset-gender dysphoria" where someone later in life believes they are gender dysphoric which may occur for a variety of reasons. This is when I think it can be more aptly labeled as a mental illness. Truly gender-dysphoric people are not "mentally ill," in fact they are perceiving reality exactly how it is, they are just born with an unfortunate defect.
Should be gender dysphoria, not body.
This is consistent with what I have read in the recent medical literature. I am also skeptical about the "adult-onset" gender dysphoria. Their excuse is that they had been enduring for years until they finally figured our what they had been suffering. So maybe that was the case with people who grew up decades ago. But if someone does not realize their gender dysphoria well into their adulthood today, I would be very suspicious.
Hopefully, it will become easier to sort out the real ones from the imaginary ones.
