I have no idea what Desiree knows about exercise physiology.

But I know what it takes to run 50 miler, 100k 100 miler and 24 hour races. It's quite a different story than a Marathon.

And Dan O'Brien would have given the US the best chance of a gold medal in Barcelona but he bombed the pole vault at the Trials. He set the world record about a month after the Olympics. However, he did not perform when it counted and thus he did not earn his Olympic spot. Neither did Sara Hall. I would have loved to see her make an Olympic team but she just didn't run the way she did in London. C'est la vie.

Ron Tabb reportedly ran 2:09:31 with a 17 mile long run which would have been world class during that era. George can correct me if my memory is fading with age.

While Yuta Sheetara (Letsrun blocks the correct spelling of his name) supposedly ran 2:06:11 with a 30km long run which is slightly longer than your 18 mile declaration.

Similarly, it's my understanding that Gert Thys ran 2:06 with a 30km training run back when 2:06 was top 10 in the world.

The finish of this race was not all that much of a secret. Seems like the 1/2 marathon by Rupp and Hasay finished at the same place

I have no idea, I thought it was considered understood that injury and training runs >=18 milers were contemporaneous with increasing injury risk. Certainly that would include say a 32 miler even if that is a sub-maximal attempt [training run albeit at sub WR pace in a 'soft' distance]. Especially relevant if said individual is indeed the first alternate for participation in possibly under 5 months at the Olympic Games in the full mary.

I also am an abject moran and have no idea what I'm talking about, generally speaking.

I don't feel like wading thru 7 other pages here so there's this: it is NOT a World Record. World Athletics doesn't recognize the distance for records consideration. It's a World Best. You can check the WA website to see for your yourselves.

It's a 'soft record' because it's rarely contested largely because there's no prize money there. It takes a sub 2:30 marathoner to do what the Charlevoix, MI resident did. Make it WA record distance, put up prize money & the record will go sub 2:55 soon enough.

Understand, this info isn't to degrade or disparage her solo effort (w/a male pacemaker), no. She ran very fast and deserves int'l attention - but not for a WR. A WB, yes.

it was still a pretty damn good workout and one of the most interesting things i read about on this site today. next time she can do a nick symmonds and invite us along along to run behind her in relay fashion.

So Adriana Nelson is Romanian again?  What a joke, she's 41 and long in the tooth and desperately wanting to extend her career and get to Tokyo.  She was Romanian up until about 15 years ago, then switched to USA to get the USATF benefits and when she could no longer make a US team (2012 was the latest) then she had to go back to Romanian allegiance.  People who call out Alexi Pappas for going Greek should be outraged over Nelson's shady country-hopping loophole opportunism.  This is as bad or worse than the paper Qataris and Bahrainians. At least we can feel good that as a choke artist she never did anything of note when she had to compete for a USA team spot.  She's just as dodgy as her fellow Romanian marathon women like Constantina Dita and there's good reason nobody legit in Boulder will touch her, much like that other sketchy Euro Adrienne Berry.

OK, enough Hall talk. I'm a big fan - she might be my favorite marathoner these days - but she ain't the alternate. Des is. And for those following, Ali is not close to being in shape. Everything is posted; it's one thing I like about NAZ. I check out Faubs and them all the time. But look at this page. You can (but don't need to bother) scroll back a few weeks. I admire her and think the Trials was a great race. I'm fine with starting a family and all she does. Just saying I'd like to see Des go.

I agree that the 50km distance should be recognized by World Athletics, and there is a movement already underway. The organizers were very much aware of the fact that this was going to be a World Best attempt and not a World Record but the general public along with the basic sports coverage doesn't know the difference.

It should be noted that the organizers incorporated the technical requirements at this event for a world record which are more stringent then for a World Best. If and when World Athletics adopts the 50km distance, Desi's performance would be ratified as a WR (if no other lady betters her time).
