Here are the total excess death numbers from the 24 countries that participate in the Euromomo survey.

Week 17 just released today.

These totals for Weeks 1-17 are from the years 2018 and 2020- we must keep in mind that this is all during a described global pandemic of historical proportions that has been the stated cause for the lock down of 3-4 billion people and the shutting down of numerous economies across the world- not to mention the immense suffering caused <i>by</i> both <i>of</i> those reactions to this pandemic.

Can someone explain how in the world, if we are in the midst of the equivalent of the Black Plague <b>there are over 400,000 less deaths in 2020</b> than in 2018.

There is no amount of "social distancing" or fewer cars on the street or the wearing of masks or...that can account for a full reduction in total excess deaths of a full 33%.

Anyone want to try to explain this?

Furthermore, comparing the first 7-8 weeks of the years is dumb because as of Feb 21, there were only 47 cases in Europe. That's point 2.

In conclusion, my explanation for Allen53 Excess Death totals data is: he is a liar who doesn't understand the basics of the linear flow of time.

Because acting normal increased risk. More cars driving around, all that.

In this case, we aren't do all that. We're just dying because of a pandemic.

Had we done nothing, you could add the regular death rate to the pandemic death rate, and that would be a much higher number.

You two are showing special reading skills. Allen53's post said the first 17 weeks, not 7, you both missed that, then doubled down based on that erroneous reading. Also, is it supposed to be good as gold that, the ironically handled can't count, said he looked up the actual numbers but did not provide a link (nor did Allen53)?

The rest of Can't count's response is hard to read and incoherent, except for those special few like Corona, that drink at the alter of hoping more people die from COVID. Perhaps have Jesse proofread for you, he can do that while he waits for Boris to die.

Personally, I'm hoping the IFR is in the .1-.36% like has been published, that would be good news for all of us, except for the death cult I guess.

Not so good at the reading comprehension, eh? My point was that the first 7-8 weeks of the 17 is a bad basis for comparison because it was pre-coronavirus. So, don't jump to conclusions based on your own misreadings, mmkay?

The first part is a throwaway comment to indicate that any number is a bad number.

The point about a lock down or not is that with good management you will never know in hindsight whether too much has been done, but with bad management you will know that you did too little.

This is why the debates are circular.

However, if you want to speculate now about domestic crimes and self abuse going up, what about general crime and road tolls going down, just to name two.

We know how many people have died even with a lock down, much greater than was speculated by OP without a lock-down.

We can also draw conclusions given the effect of the lock down on other infectious diseases (eg flu), to what magnitude the numbers could have been higher.

The true goalpost movers that will never admit being wrong will say it's the social distancing. Others with common sense will tell you that it's the natural mortality of the virus. No one here wants to admit the latter because they would have to admit they were wrong. If the true mortality rate turns out to be 0.1%, how are you going to explain that social distancing is what saved all the lives? That's not how it works.

My father in law who is 56 years old, healthy, non-smoker, no pre-existing conditions and does not take any prescription medication just spent three days in the ICU with pneumonia and a blood clot in his lung. COVID test negative. Someone explain that.
