Greetings Mr Rono,
First time that I'm checking in on your "training for masters mile" thread but have kept an occasional eye on it since it's inception.
Had the privelege of witnessing in person your WR 5000 at UC Berkeley Edwards Stadium in spring of 1978 (often referred to as a dual meet but I recall it as a triangular).
You may recall that we met many times in the early-mid 1980s as I was the running promotions guy with Reebok...we met while you ran on our team at Falmouth and other largely East Coast races...I believe that you resided in either upstate NY or Jersey at the time
Regardless, it sounds as though you are rounding into condition and considering some upcoming races i.e possibly Carlsbad 5000 with Nolan Shaheed on April 1st. The nature of my message is to pesonally invite you to compete the following week (Saturday, April 7th) in San Francisco in a one mile track race.
I am co-organizing the master's mile in conjunction with the Johnny Mathis Track & Field Invitational at San Francisco State University...this is a long time collegiate meet so named because Johnny Mathis was once our school record holder in the high jump @ 6ft-8in.
The track is in excellent shape as it was re-surfaced just a couple of years ago...it is virtually windless because it sits deep down in a bowl. We anticipate 15 or so age 40-60 milers ranging from about 4:30 to 5:10, so there'll be good competition to run with...note that it is difficult to even find decent master's one mile outdoor track races in the US...1500s, yes...some low key all - comers, yes...at any rate this is likely a good opportunity just over two months away...long enough to improve your fitness with some specific work.
This invitation to you Henry includes paying for your airfare, hotel, and meal money and of course providing you with an opportunity to step on the line to test yourself in a bonafide master's mile.
I wish you continued success in your noble venture...it must be a difficult concept to grasp having been on such an unparalelled level as your glory days in '78...more power to you and here's to setting some "modern era" PRs.
I'll look forward to your response.
best
MF
