I spend a lot of time in civil courts that hear a lot of credit card debt/auto debt defaults and evictions. When the defendant shows up, it is always the same thing. I got sick and couldn't work. I got hurt and couldn't work. Then I got fired. While in the white collar world, we all have professional HR departments and can get medical leave under FMLA (a program Trump would probably want to repeal). But for low income people working on a landscaping crew, doing construction or working at a little daycare, if they are out for a few days because they are sick or hurt, they usually get fired. Taking away health care because they cannot work is just kicking them while they are down.
And then even if someone is a horrible deadbeat who sits around all day looking at only fans and getting drunk, what good comes from putting them in debt for tens of thousands of dollars if they break a bone or get cancer? You are just making sure that if they ever turn things around in their life, they will be weighed down with medical debt.
