Saw some interesting theories tossed around elsewhere.
Let's suppose nobody is magically moving entire supply chains to the US en masse, in the face of extremely uncertain tariffs, that seem to keep changing.
Could it be that the plan was really to push for a national sales tax, to shift the tax burden from millionaires to the middle class and the poor? But as it is difficult to enact a national sales tax, enacting lots of tariffs kind of accomplishes the same thing?
(I'm not saying this is really a strong theory--it would kind of assume Trump has a long-term plan that he is able to keep quiet, both parts of which seem kind of a stretch. But it is fun to discuss anyway.)
