I saw that he answered this on his recent 20 mile run at sub 6 pace. Maybe you can find the quote? It was something like he uses the phone outside so he can keep track of his kids and some other random reason for using his watch when on his treadmill
He can obviously do a 20-mile run at sub 6 pace on a nice day around the Boulder Res and diagonal hwy. Any 14:45 5km kind of runner could do that.
However how about this as a case study: Did he actually do a 20-mile run at sub 6-min pace that day?
Take into account the total elapsed time (2:01+) and the fact that he intentionally used the Strava iPhone app and I'd say he could have gotten *an extra 0.5+ mile in distance* compared to his expensive wrist GPS Garmin which nearly all runners know is more accurate. Which apparently he just couldn't use outside. But of course does use when inside on a treadmill.
Objectively he probably did a 19.8 mile run at very slightly over 6:00-min per mile pace on that day. It's splitting hairs. Just like making your weight 10-15lbs lighter on Zwift is. Actually that is flat out cheating. But it all adds up.
(1) yes a 14:45 5k runner COULD run 20 miles at sub 6 pace at 5,000 feet, but that would be a hard to very hard run for him. Joe Klecker does these kinds of run and then he does two easy days after before he runs workout. Meaning that even for Joe Klecker, 20 miles at sub 6 pace at that altitude is essentially a workout.
Garmin watches are pretty known for inflating distances also, so maybe everyone on Strava is just a liar
Everything posted on Strava based on GPS is less than 100% accurate but do some research and testing and you shall find Garmin is far more accurate than the Strava app. I’ve seen 2 mile differences for runs around 20 miles for people running the same route. But go on with your bad self trying to discredit everyone else by supporting your idol.

Honestly most of the people who "support" David on this thread have been pretty reasonable and tried to see both sides. The haters just have no mercy and it's very entertaining

David’s whole “love everyone” and “no secretz” schtick is quite easy to see through but apparently these gullible folks are eating it up. I guess that’s why the YouTuber / influencer market is so successful, there’s thousands of these Marks who will eagerly buy all the stupid crap he’s slinging and get pumped up by his fluffed up self-promotion. Maybe they are just trying to justify the thousands they have spent on “personal coaching”. Now excuse me while I go put on my bucket hat, nose strip, ankle weights and 3 down jackets and do hill repeats and collapse in the snow! Huzzah!

People who have dealt with narcissists in their personal life/been their victim/watched people close to them be a victim and figured out their quirks and MO over years and years will see through Roche. People who like to believe everyone is 'good' deep down and who are maybe a bit too nice and yes, gullible will NOT.
Why not? Because they are GOOD. They usually have charisma. They have spun a web of lies and created this image that they present to others. They choose professions where they get attention, choose partners who admire them and use people around them for their own benefit. Heck I knew a man who was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder who admitted that the only reason he got married and had kids was because it made him look good in society. Not saying that's David Roche. But he shows a LOT of the very typical narcissistic traits.. and narcissists are NEVER good people. They are liars, they use and betray people and they feed off attention.
Nailed it. I would wager most of the people defending David on the internet have never had a personal relationship with him. For those of us who have, this isn't about him claiming some mile time he can't run, or similar, it's about not wanting other people to be manipulated.
He is not a good person, which matters a hell of a lot more than his running accolades, and the fact people refuse to believe that simply because he comments "You're amazing, we love you!!!!" on everything is so sad.

Narcissism is not as black-and-white as some influencers make it sound.
Officially, narcissistic personality disorder is a spectrum with some similar traits to other cluster B disorders such as histrionic personality disorder. From my understanding, it seems that HPD may be less calculating than NPD. A pyramid scheme or MLM, if true, would be quite deliberate. Rambling on about things, possibly not so much.
The narcissism influencers often talk about "flying monkeys" who defend the narcissist.
When he mentions that other runners could break his Leadville record, that seems inconsistent with narcissism.
