Okay, found this in today's NY Times, which suggests that it may have been one of Trump's aides who blew the whistle:
"Over recent months, investigators were in contact with roughly a half-dozen of Mr. Trump’s current aides who had knowledge of how the documents were handled, two people briefed on the approaches said. At least one witness provided the investigators with information that led them to want to further press Mr. Trump for material, according to a person familiar with the inquiry."
You’re not making the point you think you’re making.
Indefensible is not synonymous with criminal. The classified information is a legally simple case. The fake electors could be very strong. Trying to prosecute a president for inaction is going to be very dicey.
When it comes to the classified documents case, anything short of a conviction will be a win for Trump.
Trump took action against the election results beginning from the night of the election all the way through to his 1/6 rally speech which fired up his supporters. There were constant tweets about different types of fraudulent votes that were baseless and there were multiple calls to state legislators made by Trump to change the election results including a recorded one where he asked the Georgia SOS to commit election fraud.
The evidence for 1/6 is overwhelming and a trial will destroy Trump whether a conviction is obtained or not. Trump not testifying will only make it worse.

If he’s barred from holding office and national security documents are returned as the MUST be, then that is win for everyone and a loss for Trump.
Trump’s actions on 1/6 are documented by his tweets and things he said during speech. A POTUS going silent during an attack on the U.S. Capitol is indefensible. Trump currently has a team of attorneys preparing a defense for 1/6 but it’s like trying pull a rabbit out of a hat.

This could be key NYT speculation on the rat issue at the Trump compound. Trump desperately needs to know who the rat is, so they can be dealt with accordingly. I'll be the identity of the rat keeps Trump up at night more than any possible charges.
What is an "aide"? That could be goddam anyone. Someone said earlier that it could be one of the Secret Service agents guarding Trump. That would make sense. The Secret Service certainly would have a motive to narc Trump out after he attacked one of them in the infamous limo ride. They bided their time until they could bust Trump in the chops by narcing him to the Feds on the stolen documents.
And don't forget Giuliani, Trump's favorite punching bag. Maybe he finally grew a pair and decided to get revenge for years of physical and emotional abuse. Having food thrown at you is humiliating. Maybe Giuliani finally said "Enough is enough. I have value as a human being under god. I shall have my revenge!" Giuliani could have tipped the Feds to all the stolen documents scattered around the Trump compound.

Also, the point is being made that it was for the good of other nations besides our own in that confidential information about other countries nuclear programs is likely contained in the documents. It would have been an international snafu had it fallen into the wrong hands (besides the wrong hands it was in at the time).

I have no idea, but it wasn’t Giuliani and Trump’s sons are fanatically loyal to him. The information the informant provided to the DOJ was accurate so I don’t particularly care who the snitch is.
