No, we have to restructure *entitlements,* but there is no political will and this dog and pony show you speak of was never more on display than that SOTU I just referred to. This is easy actually. Don’t cut them. Raise the “retirement age” by a year or mere months, whatever is palatable. Index it to the PCE rather than the CPI. Embrace Al Gore’s lockbox and put the funds in a 529 type program w very few investment options and an orientation based on age, so that nobody can do anything stupid, especially our federal government. And, yes, raise taxes, raise the base on which entitlement taxes are enacted, but only if you do everything else first.

But there’s the rub. There’s no political will for compromise. On the left it’s always and everywhere raise taxes and raise spending. On the right it’s cut taxes and cut spending. Some taxes should be cut if higher taxes make our corporations less competitive and encourage capital investment elsewhere. But, true, it won’t work if you don’t also cut spending.

Finally, this Ukraine-Russia war started in 2014. We provoked the invasion of Crimea. Obama/Biden cronyism and corruption created this entire conflagration. I realize that’s not popular among NYT readers but it’s truth. And, because Trump had the temerity to want to investigate the crime ring, we had an impeachment over it. And then a full scale pardon. Criminals know a criminal when they see one. Sorry it’s so difficult for you to acknowledge.

1) There exist authoritarian regimes. Not evidence.

2) People adapt to prison life. Not evidence. In general, the simpler the system, the easier to adapt to. That says nothing of a wish for strongman/authoritarian governments.

3) Many struggle when a simple system that they are used to goes away and is replaced by a more complex system. Again, not evidence. Of course many struggle to adapt to complex systems. That says nothing at all about a wish for authoritarianism.

Thus far, we only have evidence of eggs.
