None of what I wrote was wrong. We don't have to have a recession, but, surely better to get it out of the way well before the midterms, especially if it means we cut out the fat in government spending.
I don't understand all of you extreme ideologues, hanging on every data point. The Precious Roy's and Agip's of the world, while clearly intelligent, are constantly pounding the liberal drum and simply uttering myopic, disingenous talking points on every piece of grating news. Sounds like a couple of Stephen Colbert writers. On the other hand, no Trumpers can be bothered to acknowledge that protectionism doesn't work, isolationist politics don't work over the long haul and are a bad idea. Trump is not to blame for the CPI at the moment as so much of this was baked (Fed's target over the past four years was always 2%, we never got there), but he's surely culpable in the next few months.
But, what nobody seems to be asking, certainly not over on the far left because of their absolute hatred and vitriol for all things Trump, what if everything goes right by 2029? First time in an entire generation someone has the absolute audacity to attack the deficit and debt. To draw a firm boundary at the border. To try to negotiate with NATO such that it's not merely a US subsidiary. But, Don's a "rapist, felon, grifter, oligarch." Because, you know, Biden and the Biden crime family syndicate was so pure and morally persuasive.
there was no biden crime family syndicate. Calling it that is a right wing fantasy to excuse their electing a career criminal. 'They all do it' is the right wing motto and it's disgusting.
Anyway, I'm all for rooting out government waste. I wish DOGE well. It won't make any material difference on the debt or deficit, of course, esp when they at the same time reduce revenue by gutting the IRS and lowering income taxes and lowering economic activity. So it's sort of silly to get too impressed by a bad strategy. But sure, less waste is good. Fine.
The only thing that will make a difference on the debt/deficit is cutting entitlement spending and defense teamed by growth. If they fix those I'll applaud. Until then, this is just a dog and pony show.
And of course this trade war is absolutely stupid beyond words. And we all know that fewer illegal immigrants means the economy will suffer.
Yay Doge. Yay no immigrants. Golf clap.
Again, disingenuous partisan narrative. Nobody is saying no immigrants. Give me a break. But a firm sovereign border and a pathway for legal immigrants? No problem. But, yes, there will be some short term pain as this administration cleans house and renovates the absolute chaos Biden (Harris) left behind.
Cutting entitlement spending? So, you mean when Biden got up at his SOTU address and called the GOP out very publicly to never touch social security he was being disingenuous like you??? No, say it ain’t so!! We shouldn’t cut them nor should we call them entitlements as people actually earned, saved, and invested these funds, but coerced by big government that already spent the money and is giving back a paltry, zero percent return adjusted for inflation at retirement.
No, we have to restructure *entitlements,* but there is no political will and this dog and pony show you speak of was never more on display than that SOTU I just referred to. This is easy actually. Don’t cut them. Raise the “retirement age” by a year or mere months, whatever is palatable. Index it to the PCE rather than the CPI. Embrace Al Gore’s lockbox and put the funds in a 529 type program w very few investment options and an orientation based on age, so that nobody can do anything stupid, especially our federal government. And, yes, raise taxes, raise the base on which entitlement taxes are enacted, but only if you do everything else first.
But there’s the rub. There’s no political will for compromise. On the left it’s always and everywhere raise taxes and raise spending. On the right it’s cut taxes and cut spending. Some taxes should be cut if higher taxes make our corporations less competitive and encourage capital investment elsewhere. But, true, it won’t work if you don’t also cut spending.
Finally, this Ukraine-Russia war started in 2014. We provoked the invasion of Crimea. Obama/Biden cronyism and corruption created this entire conflagration. I realize that’s not popular among NYT readers but it’s truth. And, because Trump had the temerity to want to investigate the crime ring, we had an impeachment over it. And then a full scale pardon. Criminals know a criminal when they see one. Sorry it’s so difficult for you to acknowledge.
I do think a lot of trump worship is because he projects the image of a strongman. There is a core human wish to be dominated by a chief/king/strongman. Which also explains the right wing's fury against transgenders...it messes with their whole view that men should aspire to be like putin and trump.
Also, and I've said this from the start, Trump is one of the greatest salesmen who has ever lived. And there's a sucker born every minute. He's really good at sales and politics is a form of sales.
You have written the bolded part many times on this and other threads.
Do you have any evidence of this claim?
Do you, yourself, have such a wish?
It may not be "core" for all humans, but we can be DAMN sure that all of the Trumpers on this site would like to be bent over by The Orange One. Repeatedly.

You used to have some decent posts but that is a garbage post and you should be ashamed of it. Just garbage.
People like you thinking this is a "nightmare" means we are exactly over the target.
Oh, the irony!
I think that he went a little far. To be really be sure that we're "over target" (adolt trying to sound military), I think that we'd need to see USAID, IRS, and Dept. of Ed. employees sent to detention camps.....or worse.

wow, that is pretty sick and big talk from behind a keyboard. Should be taken down, like a lot of these, but enjoy yourself and your fantasies.
I think it's clear that looking at human history that people have a deep need to trade freedom in exchange for security. Look at all the totalitarian governments that last for long long times with no real rebellion. People prefer to follow a strong confident man than to make decisions for themselves. Evidence? North Korea, Cuba, Iran, USSR, China, any of a number of authoritarian nations. Look at how easily men adapt to prison life with its rules and clear hierarchy. Many struggle mightily when those rules/hierarchy are taken away upon their release.
clearly women have always made having a 'protector' be part of the tradeoff they make in marriage. Women usually respond well to strong confident men. They might be susceptible to the appeal of an authoritarian on gender grounds. Men more on wanting a father figure, a boss, a great man to follow.
freedom and democracy are not natural states of man. These things are recent concepts that could fade very quickly if we aren't good enough to protect them.
So, no evidence. Just a belief that you have. Nothing wrong with that.
I would suggest that authoritarian governments are more simply explained by people's desire to survive. When someone who could kill you demands that you follow his orders, there is a tendency to follow his orders rather than get killed.
That does not mean you have a wish for this (strongman) person to exist or to play the role of bully/dictator in your life. It only means that your wish to survive makes you acquiesce to his demands.
I think that you're describing the 50-60% of people (OK, voters) who DIDN'T bring enthusiastically bring Trump to power (and wouldn't be strong enough to resist him).
That leaves us back at wondering why ~40% of voters were and are thrilled with him, and another ~10% are phenomenally dumb.

Do it like this: "Objection! Relevance. Calls for speculation. How can the witness possibly know whether Trumpers want to be bent over by The Orange?"
If you need the real reason for RU invading Ukraine, it's this. Poland has been on a tear economically and approaching Western levels of wealth.
No way Putin could tolerate yet another slavic nation on its border succeeding by attaching itself to the West. Ukraine wanted to follow the Polish model by leaning West so it had to die. So Russians would not feel they too could lean west and succeed by tossing Putin overboard.
Blaming NATO for RU's invasion is self-hatred.
"Poland is about to overtake Japan in GDP per capita. no one who came of age in the 1980s can comprehend this."
He presented evidence. Right after the punctuated word "Evidence?" He listed three sentences worth of evidence.
I have egg evidence.
No. No evidence.
But eggs are an excellent source of protein and yolks.
This below:
"North Korea, Cuba, Iran, USSR, China, any of a number of authoritarian nations. Look at how easily men adapt to prison life with its rules and clear hierarchy. Many struggle mightily when those rules/hierarchy are taken away upon their release."
is evidence. It is evidence presented in support of the theory that "There is a core human wish to be dominated by a chief/king/strongman," "people have a deep need to trade freedom in exchange for security," and/or "People prefer to follow a strong confident man than to make decisions for themselves." It is evidence. You may not find it persuasive evidence, but it is evidence.
We have a lot of evidence. Bathroom evidence. Uncontroverted bathroom evidence that many consider to be dispositive evidence of feloniousness.

I completely disagree with the idea that cutting spending is the only way to reduce the deficit.
Growth is the only viable way out of this problem.
If you make $100k and spend $120k you have a $20k deficit.
If you make $120k the next year and maintain your spending level at $120k you have balanced your budget.
If you make $140k the year after that and maintain the spending at $120k you now have a surplus.
For the Government, that's not growth. That's revenue, i.e. taxes collected.
So, you would agree that a $4.5 Trillion tax cut to billionaires is counter productive.
You mindlessly declare that any tax cut is a "tax cut for billionaires".
The 2017 tax cuts lowered every single tax bracket and increased the standard deduction for everyone.
You don't seem to comprehend that the government does not create wealth. The people create wealth and the government steals some of it.
When the people can keep more of their own money they invest it and create more wealth which allows the government to increase its "revenue" because there's a larger pie for it to steal from.
It may not be "core" for all humans, but we can be DAMN sure that all of the Trumpers on this site would like to be bent over by The Orange One. Repeatedly.
