Immune imprinting can lead to poorer responses to antigens that are slightly different to the one that give the initial immunization. You cultivate the “original antigenic sin” and fail to develop higher efficacy responses to variants.
It’s a challenge for vaccine development for highly mutangenic viruses (influenza)
What it definitely does NOT mean is that innate or adaptive immune system is inherently weaker or cannot mount strong responses to novel (except the case mentioned) or prior antigens.
