Calin Georgescu is a far right, pro-Russia/anti-NATO candidate who ran for president in Romania. Georgescu was previously an NGO guy who was into sustainable development. Prior to 2024, he was a political nobody except for being proposed for prime minister by a fringe right wing party. His campaign for president was boosted by a blatant and ham handed Russian influence operation. His tiktok site received over 50 million views in just 4 days. There are only 19 million people in all of Romania. Authorities uncovered millions of Euros being spent on bots and influencers to boost his content on tiktok and Telegram. Much of the funds were traceable back to Russia. And Georgescu was bold enough to report to election authorities that his campaign did not spend any money on the election, claiming that his campaign was run solely by a group of dedicated volunteers. In relation to the US, this would be like going on instagram and having Trump videos keep showing up on your feed because Putin spent a few billion on bot farms to make it seem to the algorithm like there were a half billion people watching Trump's content. Georgescu and the Russians were essentially caught red handed.
After Georgescu took the lead in the first round of voting, the Romanian constitutional court annulled the results and ordered a re-run of the election. Just the other day, the Romanian constitutional court ruled that Georgescu could not run again.
Romania shares a large border with Ukraine. It has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the war as it is well aware that Russia desires to push through Ukraine to the Carpathian Mountain Range, which Russia sees as a critical strategic physical barrier to the West. Everything east of the Carpathian Mountain Range is basically flat and very difficult to defend. Romania has always been very pro-NATO and wary of Russia. Romania hosts one of the largest NATO bases in Europe.
So, guess what Trump does? Supports Romania's resistance to Russian influence on its elections? Nope. Trump, Vance and Musk have all thrown their arms up in the air claiming that Romania's stance against Russian interference is an assault on Democracy.
What happens next will be the Great Gift to Putin. Trump is setting up a conflict with NATO and the EU. Trump will demand that Romania let Georgescu run. If Romania capitulates to Trump and lets him run but he loses, Trump will claim that the election was rigged and must be overturned. If Trump's demands are not met, he will pull the US out of NATO and remove all US forces from Romania, including the US Aegis missile defense system. This would leave Romania as a sitting duck to a Russian advance through Ukraine.
