I agree these resourcefulness and “success without resources” achievements should be in the spotlight.
Conversely I’d like to tag coaches who have the negative trend of getting the top HS recruits but those bluechips don’t improve or are plagued with injuries that cause them to drop off the roster.
So....a list of everyone?
No. The outliers on both ends, measuring a coach’s impact.
There are 1100+ colleges (D1-D3) with 3-5 coaches. That’s more than 5000 coaches in the US when you add in the NAIA and community college coaches who are also busting tail. So no, I am not talking about a list of every coach. This number does not even include high school coaches, at least one of whom is considered by some here to be The Best Distance Coach in the country. (Even if he was, could he assume the job of directing an entire P4 program? That’s a no from me.)
A list of 50 would be less than 1% of coaches. But the list of coaches with underperforming or injured bluechips is not 5000 people long. How many programs get top performing HS freshmen and international athletes? Those are the “Big Name” coaches the armchair ADs on LRC like to see get every P5 job. IMO some are very effective coaches AND are visionary program managers. Others are lucky to have their jobs, based on the intermittent success of a few incredible recruits, and are measurably poor program managers.
People always try and claim a coach is on Letsrun pitching their case. If you know anything about athletic department hiring, you should know this website doesn't matter. It's purely for us fans and speculators.
Sorry for trying to spark some conversation on what is one of the best open jobs in years!
Let's just go with typical Letsrun and claim FSU is going to be Petros.
Anyone that knows Ken knows his family is in Florida. And what coach in the country wouldn't want to be closer to family and lead a highly successful program where you dominated before?
What a disgrace for someone with all of those coaching duties for they school to only pay 30-35k. That is poverty level pay for someone who is supposed to have a 4 year degree just to have a job. wow!!!!!

Yes he is such a good coach. Unbelievable he was able to get *checks notes* 1 distance athlete to the NCAA championship this year. Remarkable. Hire him now.
Also I believe Matt Lane deserves this job as much as anyone of the ‘big dogs’
Did you mean to say Chris Layne? Dude has built a heck of a program at Milligan, though I'm not sure Florida State wants to take their chances on an NAIA coach. Stranger things have happened, though.

Chris Layne isn't leaving Milligan. He is an agent for some pro runners that wouldn't be allowed in the NCAA.

I did exchange an email with them today and it's an entry level position to help her (HC) and her assistant jumps coach with the multis, etc. So more of a supplemental role for someone just starting out looking to learn (is what I got from the email).
