I need to confess: I am a big flat slobbish loser. I can’t think right, can’t have sex anymore and I crap myself every night thinking about going to jail. I hate my fans but they are so stupid and pathetic that they may help me to get out of jail if they elect me. I like golden showers and I am fearful that Melania or Ivanka won’t be able to give them to me in prison. I’m scared.
You would think that the Republican Party would, at a minimum, not nominate for president a man who has broken multiple serious laws and many times broken his oath to protect and preserve the Constitution.
Since Republicans have not done that, we have to assume that Republicans in fact approve of serious criminality - or are criminals themselves - and do not care to protect and preserve the Constitution.
Sad state this country has arrived at.
We are doomed.
Now for the scandalous note: the same thing is about to happen to the Democratic party. You will have someone who is a strong leader, likely has a repulsive personality, and let's the party crumble under the intolerable stretching between your moderate democrats and the progressive wing. Time will tell, but, even if I'm wrong...don't worry: not much will change. Except the news outlets will reach a new low everyday. I can live with that. Hope you can, too.
the way democracies die is what you are describing - one party goes too far and doesn't accept losing so the other party feels it must do the same thing to survive. And there you are: a country where no party will accept losing so violence and rule-breaking dominate instead of 'you won this one, we'll win the next.'
We could only a year from this, worst case if Trump gets in office and does what he says.

A disagree. Democracies don't die. They change. We don't have a Democratic-Republican party anymore, a Bull Moose Party, or, for that matter, a Whig Party. Somehow our Republic still stands.
My high school English teacher put it best: "Those who resist change cannot resist a change for the worse."
Wait until 2048. I can guarantee you there will be a candidate who makes Trump look like a well thought-out, respectable choice. (See: Bush, George W.) And I'm pretty sure there will be at least one "MF'er" in her campaign slogan. Maybe two.

Democracies die. There are many examples of that.

fair point that there is often not a binary 'democracy' and then 'democracy has ended.'
things just get very gray and non transparent. Hungary is the most recent example of 'once a democracy now eroded.' Same cause - they elected a 'big man' who thinks the nation would collapse without him so he consolidates power and prevents political foes from having any chance whatsoever. That's what I'm talking about. If given the chance Republicans will do things that make their losing elections vanishingly unlikely.
Is Hungary a dead democracy? It's a spectrum but pretty much, yeah even tho they still have elections. And of course Republicans have expressed admiration of what Orban has done there.
We could talk about Turkey in similar ways.

I would like to formally apologize to all Trumpers. I sincerely thought more of you were intelligent, rational people that could differentiate between truth and BS. I was so, so wrong.
IOWA @CNN entrance poll: Do you think Biden legitimately won in 2020? Yes 30% No 65% . Trump fit for presidency, if convicted of a crime? Yes 64% No 31%

Trump's greatest accomplishment is the destruction of truth.

Disagree.
Democracies do indeed die.
Weimar Republic
Uganda (pre Idi Amin)
Korea (pre-war)
Pre-Sadam Iraq
Ghana
Venezuela
Ok, let's use your examples:
* Weimar Republic...the one run by the Kaiser? (Oops...he abdicated. But so what? The term "Weimar Republic" was coined by Hitler. Also, see below.)
* Uganda...not exactly flourishing before Amin stepped into the power vacuum.
* Korea...divided by Civil War, only the South flourishes. And, is fine compared to the North.
* Ghana...see Uganda.
* Venezeula...this one is personal. The people there spit in the face of Mrs. Nixon when she visited during the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner."
Can you think of a *western* democracy that has fallen by the wayside? Germany did just fine after reuniting, which is a useful counterpoint.

how about this one.
Trump has completely separated his people from reality. Millions of his voters actually would drink the kool aid if he told them to. I mean that literally. Millions of his voters would commit suicide for Trump if he said they needed to, to end immigration or m'aga or for whatever lie works for Trump at the moment.
This is what it looks like when an authoritarian bewitches a country and takes it over. We are living through it right now. Right now.
Allan Smith @akarl_smith · 1h Another notable breakdown from the @NBCNews Iowa entrance poll Do you believe Biden legitimately won the presidency in 2020? Yes: Haley voters: 79% DeSantis voters: 40% Trump voters: 6%

the answer is Hungary
Some could argue Russia too. It was a sorta democracy until Putin dismantled it for a trumpy cult of personality. Russians still vote, but only for state-approved candidates.

Russia collapsed under the weight of communism being communism. Putin has brought it back from the brink of third world status through energy rights. Surely you have heard of the pain at the pump stateside being referred to as "Putin's price hike!" Hungary was invaded by communists...from Russia. You may not like Orban, but he's there duly elected leader. And before you say, "dictator," please bear in mind that the term has been used interchangeably to describe both Trump AND Obama (because the latter didn't play nice with the opposition party). Again...what western democracy has been toppled by an election? By my count, none of them. This one won't be, either. You don't have to like Trump, but, if re-elected, it will be because he won using a system of rules both parties agreed upon.
I'm going to bed. Have a good night. And have a good run the next time you do so.

Take a read. what orban did is pretty common. You take power legitimately and then take away the power of the opposition to unseat you. Russia, Turkey, Hungary
A self-coup, also called an autocoup (from Spanish autogolpe) or coup from the top, is a form of coup d'état in which a nation's head, having come to power through legal means, tries to stay in power through illegal means. Th...

Who coined the term "Weimar Republic" is not relevant - only a cute rhetorical flourish. And Germany is very much NOT a counterpoint. They did not recover from authoritarianism on their own. "Recovery" to democratic principles was forced upon them by the utter destruction of the the Nazi regime by outside powers and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
If you want to use Germany as a counterpoint then you will have to accept the very real possibility of the US falling into authoritarianism, starting World War III, being utterly destroyed, and being put back together by a benevolent China which, for inexplicable reasons, decides to promote democracy when it rebuilds the world in an image to its liking.
What the heck happened to the orangeman's hand? Don't tell me it's from playing golf. It wasn't there in Iowa . He must have fallen down with his clumsy self.
