bullsht. It's got differences but not enough to say theyre unqualified. It takes a new assistant hired out of high school two days to study and pass a recruiting test. Leadership is leadership. It transfers no matter what the level. You probably believe no assistant could do it either. Only head college coaches can be head college coaches right?
Some hs coaches know all the hs coaches in the state. I supposed that doesn't help to recruit either?

A high school coach can start as an assistant college coach and then move up. Tennessee is not hiring a high school coach to lead that program. There are too many people that are much more highly qualified than high school coaches. If I have to explain why then you have no clue. Anybody has the ability to learn but if you think it is the same then you just don't know.

UT is not the place to learn the ropes of a D1 SEC Director. With the tradition and expectations that are at a place like UT not even the best HS coaches could come in and not be overwhelmed by what it entails. I'm sure plenty could take the reigns of a smaller single gender D1 program and work their way up but not a UT/SEC spot.
The fact is, Tennessee is not going to hire a high school coach to take over their program. Can we get back on topic.
Yea lets get back to guesssing whos going to get hired, where people pick names out of thin air because they want to, and post them. Then everyone argues over them when they probably have no connenction to the hiring process at all.

I know UMASS Lowell is looking for an associate head coach. Is this a new position created as there budget expands from a DII to DI school?
I remember Binghamton posted for a full time assistant coach a while back but havent seen anything.
And whats going on in Maine? I saw they have two posting for assistants with some overlap between the two position. One mentioned sprints/jumps/multis? Didn't they just hire a new person? And seems like they have had a new coach in this position every year.
Why UCONN? That's a long way to move just to sell cars.

In all seriousness, for those of us who don't know, what are the major skills lacking in high school coaches (or that don't get developed at that level) required for successful coaching in the NCAA?
Penn State lady coming to UT. Tennessee trading one women's coach for another.
If I were the AD at Tenn, i'd hire Connie Price Smith. Pay her enough that her husband John can volunteer, go to Kansas and get Wayne Pate to coach my jumpers, grab Gavin Kennedy from Wisconsin for my distance groups (men and women), and have 3 open slots to build my dream team. I might fill one slot with just a full time recruiter. Tennessee has the money to make a big move, if they really decide to make a committment to the team it is a location that you can win.

There are many different skills needed for college coaching but whats important is that athletic directors don't hire head coaches who they have to teach how to be a head coach. If a high school coach wants to be a college coach then they need to go about it like everyone else; take an assistant job (pay cut from teaching) and learn the job.
The most important issue I see is the job is so drastically different in its demands than high school coaching. Those high school coaches who do enter college ranks often leave because its not at all what they thought it was going to be. Coaching is the smallest part of the job. Money, funding and your conference affiliation plays a big role on your success level and thats stressful for a high school coach. You don't recruit from the high school hallways anymore. Recruiting and administration if your program is harder than people think. In college these former HS coaches have less work/life balance, must travel all the time, miss their family, less money, less opportunity to get raises, no unions to protect their salaries and rights, and on and on. Aside from that there is something nice about coaching not being your only job. Being a teacher and a coach provides a nice balance which keeps the obsession of coaching under control.
I agree with Pate, and Kennedy. I'd bring in Greg Jack as the head coach/ throws. I might try to get Brazell from LSU to coach my sprinters.

No good coaches will go to Missouri State as long as the clown they have their is over both track and XC. That islander is awful and made a bad name for himself in the state.
As for Tennessee job you can higher a quality high school coach. I have been in both worlds myself and I can tell you High School coaching is way more difficult. The only major differences in coach college is the expectations are higher then most high schools.
The recruiting can be a grind in you want it to be. However, all the other management issues you face are similar different names and faces. From a coaching perspective. College should be easier because if you know what you are doing and who you are bringing in these kids should be way more motivated.
