DeSantis is interesting. I'm a FL resident and my feelings on him are like they are for most politicians. Sometimes I think he's ok and sometimes I think he's an idiot. A big thing with him is how the state comes out looking on COVID. He can be a bit arrogant at times and he definitely follows Trump but not, in my opinion, to the John Gotti-an point Trump seems to get to. DeSantis also doesn't have the same cult following Trump has nor is he pointedly disrespectful as Trump is. He's seems normal with a right wing lean.
I only know him from a distance but I think he's able to project the 'I hate democrats' anger enough to pull in most of the m/gas. Which might be enough to get the nomination.
M/gas probably don't mind Nikki too much, but they don't love her much either. They need someone who will entertain them, who makes them want to commit sedition. Nikki doesnt' have that. Does DeSantis? If he hates democrats enough and Spanky gets behind him, then maybe.
I could see Trump offering DeSantis a deal he can't refuse: run for president as my puppet or we'll run a trump against you.
But I only have a fleeting impression of DeSantis, from sound bites. I could be wrong.
I don't get a feeling from DeSantis of "owning the libs" throughout his campaign and term as governor was a focus. As far as the M agas are concerned, I don't think there's a candidate who can both entertain and win a nomination out there. If the next 3 years or so are spent by the GOP searching for that person, then they'll probably shoot themselves in the foot. At some point, much like the tea partyers, it will fade into the background of the part instead of being the major influence on the party and, hopefully, a sense of normalcy will develop. The Dems can do their part in this matter by keeping their loonies in check such as AOC.
