Everyone is taxed on their earnings so that's irrelevant. 150k a year is a very good income and in the UK would put you in at least the top 5% of earners. A good portion of their flights, hotels & gear are funded by sponsors, and calling the gear a business expense, whilst true, is not really relevant as they would likely buy a lot of the stuff anyway. Editors are the only real expense and it's obviously tax deductible.
A few years of earning that sort of money without the lifestyle creep that comes with it would set you up nicely to be able plod along making videos earning a few quid here and there for the rest of your life if/when the grift dries up.
So "a few years" of £150k sets you up for life now? Are you actually an adult?
No, that's not what I said. Are you actually literate?
If you check out the Strava of ‘Run the planet’ he did a half marathon in 1:38 but is claiming a 10k PB and his ever first sub 40 from it as he managed that in the second half..
However, it looks like the second half was hugely down hill with a tail wind.
Would you be claiming that?
Does this put him in a prime position to finally get his sub 3 marathon goal?
No, I would never claim a 5-10k PB from an half marathon, especially if that was done during a downhill part of the course.. You can use that time as a reference but that ain't your PB for that distance. Pick a 5-10k race and do it as fast as you can, that's your PB.
I saw an influencer claiming a 73 min half marathon as their PB which was done during London Marathon where the first 5k are all downhill, also on the official result the HM split was 74 something but he is claiming the strava half marathon on his bio..
Claiming a PB from a downhill split will only be detrimental to yourself and a massive confidence setback when you sign up for an half marathon/10k and realise you couldn't go faster than your split from a longer race.
utter embarasement but unsurpising 12th DNF for king bell-end Leonard in recent times. explain that one on the next vid please callum, cheers
There is someone in this thread (always posting under various anonymous usernames) who has it out for Leonard in particular. You can tell it's the same person because in every post they are slating him specifically by name.
Just bizarre behaviour, he must have out kicked them in a schools XC race or something and 15 years ago and they still never got over it.
DNFing a race is not some sort of grave moral failure, people need to relax a little, it's not that deep.
People also need to step back and have some perspective - this is a group with two national record holders, a World Champs finalist, European XC medallists, UK National Cross champions and a guy who ran a 2:10 marathon debut. For context, Cairess ran a 2:08 rebut and Sessemann 2:12 - so right in the middle of the two best guys in the UK.
They also make some of the best youtube content and share it for free?!
The youtube and social media world is full of absolute spoofers, shills and engagement farmers, people should direct their ire towards those people.
Telford 10k is net downhill, by enough that it rules out any times set there being eligible for national/world records. But not so much that Po10 mark it as downhill and exclude from athlete PBs.
But MK Rocket 5k is officially a downhill race on there, will not show as Po10 PB. Possibly same for Loch Ness marathon? Can't remember and it's too painful to use the site now.

Well it's certainly something that a faster runner that has optimized their PRs at most standard distances (especially those of us that have raced on the track) usually wouldn't do.
However I would say if there was an official chip mat down with like a "first half split" in a flat marathon and you actually recorded a time (you could claim a PR 'en route'). Looking at Strava or your GPS certainly doesn't cut it though....as we know those can be off!
I recently had written that my "10-mile PR" was 49:01 because I remember hand splitting my running stop watch (this was before GPS watches!) right at the 10-mile mark en route to a Half Marathon when I ran 1:04:32. (basically averaging 4:54/mile-4:55 per mile pace). Of course when push comes to shove that 10-mile performance isn't officially my PR, but then again it's not really the most common distance to be racing and the actual Half Marathon and performance is what I'm more proud of.
At this day and age of GPS watches and Strava and "running time vs total elapsed times" we see this new trick of trying to claim faster times than what the chip time and standard (wheeled and measured distance) actually says. You can't just trace back on a strava activity and find the "time stamp" around the 13 mile mark or whatever. Heck when I was running for the OTQ they used to only go by "gun time" in the certified race!

Gidey is an Ethiopian so its poor suggesting hes a national record holder and world champ finalist?? they dont have heats for a 10,000m so hows he a finalist?
we are not seriously counting tinpot relay medals an Euro medals are we? the team was soooo goodddd, they got dumped out the squad for the world xc
Ellis was a national xc champ, even Astin won it in an incredibly weak field which was her last decent race
how can DNFing not be that deep when you are happy to jump in front of a camera, take the money and boast about being a pro but fail to do the one fundamental thing a runner is expected to do; start and finish a race? TIME AND TIME AGAIN??? if they want decent content, you have to tackle the big issue rather than play up to the modernday wokeness. Beattie went AWOL all summer as well, big concerns with this bunch
Gidey was born in Eritrea and moved to Ireland when he was about 16, became a citizen, and competes for Ireland. He currently holds the 10k track and road national records and previously held the national half marathon record, running 60 high. You are correct that they don't have heats for the 10,000m therefore the round is referred to as the "final" therefore he was a finalist as he (1) achieved the qualifying standard and (2)was selected by the national federation to represent his country in the final, where he finished 19th.
I was actually referring to Leonard's team Bronze in the 2024 Eurocross but, yes, thanks for reminding me Elson got a medal in the team relay too.
Beattie and Leonard went one two at the national cross last year.
So you have national records, national titles, appearances at major championships and, making a rough guess from 5 mins research, about the 5th fastest UK marathon debutant of all time. There's no pleasing you!
What happened to the very first post on this thread? Why was it deleted? Surely a summary of a bunch of youtube videos can't be defamatory for some legal reasons?
On that note, when will ShoeTubersHaveNoEthics give us another roundup of the most recent videos? Their summaries are the only news I trust these days
Genuinely curious; what’s the influencer endgame? What are all these YouTubers and Instagrammers ultimately aiming to achieve?
I do have some empathy, in your twenties, a more traditional career path mostly sucks - working for yourself and getting comped trips and gear would be very very appealing.
The lifestyle seems good. But surely they can’t all be making huge money let alone pensions etc.
What happens when reality hits? Do they just influence indefinitely or run some crappy coaching business?
People underestimate how much these moderate size youtube channels make. It is decent money between ad revenue and sponsors across multiple platforms. A comfortable living right now but what will they be doing in 10 years?
The endgame for the savvy ones is to build their profile up big enough to support their own business. Coaching/supplements/merch or whatever. If you have 100k followers you only need a very small percentage to buy your mediocre product to be making big money.
Continues to amaze me how uninformed this thread is regarding the income of running influencers. Hugo Fry was paid £10,000 for two Instagram storiesfor a crisp brand, and he's being paid £5,000 this summer to go on a cruise holiday...
The endgame, this depends on their ambition & savviness. In Hugo's case, the agent he has signed with, Matt Nicholls, clearly demonstrates he wants to get into presenting (also explains the endless podcast appearances I guess).
Matt represents a wide range of television presenters specialising in Factual Entertainment and Entertainment:

The 48th post (page 3) of this thread is a great one. A really true opinion which was given an upvote by all but one person on this thread.
In other news, it seems Matt "Big Jail time in Japan" Fox has finally burned bridges with probably his most stalwart buddy, Luke. Both have unfollowed each other on Strava, and someone asked about him on the latest Sweat Elite podcast with Matt responding that Luke is "focusing on other things for now."
This is a guy who stuck with Foxy through his jail stint. What in the world type of crazy sh*t did he do to finally alienate Luke?!?
Matt was on an Irish podcast the other day and criticised Luke’s training so much and said “I don’t think he’ll mind me saying this”…. Maybe he did mind 😂😂
In an Instagram Q&A session he did today someone asked about Luke and basically Matt said Luke “wasn’t racing well enough” to be on the podcast or something like that and that the sweatelite podcast is a “performance oriented” show

Also seems to elude to it being because of certain opinions he said on the podcast, clearly only matt is allowed to sit for an hour and stream horrific opinions to himself hahahaha
i seem to remember my post getting deleted where I outlined that all these influencers are bonafide retards. This cole news is vindication. Half marathon PB attempts back to back weeks AND HAD BERLIN PLANNED TOO. I think the mileage isn't even the biggest issue, He seemed to be handling that fine until racing the HMs, however he absolutely got into a dick swinging contest with RTJ on instagram about it.
Just to top it off all he's learnt from this is thats he's "not invincible"
Retard
Yeah, his solo 64:45 was impressive, but if he'd have skipped that one, and run Bath, he'd probably have run faster and not done as much damage.
He does probably have 2:12-2:13 potential if he gets it all together.

Part of Gibbos issues are mental. He 100% disappeared up his own ass after London and I don't think, even with the constant injuries and issues since, he is yet to reappear
It's time to check in on the OG running YouTubers.
Kofuzi is mad that "the keyboard warriors of the running internet" were grumpy about the LA Marathon handing out medals at mile 18. I take it as an admission that he reads this thread with his daily paper!
Over at Believe in the Run, they've separated the podcast into a new channel. Perhaps so what happens on the podcast, like this week when Thomas, Karl and Robbe turned a conversation about bicycle helmets into ten minutes of joking about condoms doesn't damage the brand. I will say well done to Meaghan for not only steering the conversation away from that but telling Thomas that he should always wear protection! Since they're real life partners, I thought that was absolutely hilarious. Thomas and Karl are off to run the Grand Canyon. That should be an interesting video when they get back.
And that's all the time we have today for the OG running YouTubers. Perhaps next week I'll listen to Matt Fox's podcast again! I had to take a break from it.
Not at all - doesn't matter to his fanbase. His results may not be etched in stone formally however he'll still label himself as XX:XX half IM athlete for clicks and clout.

I ran this and know the course well from previous years. The last 10k of it (which I think is being claimed) is timed separately as an intermediate challenge (as is the last uphill mile) and it does seem to line up well with people’s 10k pb, if it’s part of a full effort for the HM (the link holds for me and the winner).
However, this guy seems to have gone off super easy up the hill and then nailed the downhill really hard (not just negative split a full effort) which probably breaks the link between the times.
I think most people know you can make decent money from it, its more the longevity factor. Even if as a medium/small youtuber you are making 150k a year ( i think this is already ambitious). You then have to take into account all the business expenses which probably mount up to 30/40k (flights/hotels/equipment/paying editors etc) and then getting taxed on top of that, your take home might be ~90k/ year with no benefits.
This seems like decent money at the time but its not ever going to be enough to retire on unless they think they can keep up that level of engagement (and platforms continue to pay this much) for 50+ years which just isn't going to happen. And even if they do invest as much as they can in a smart manner (I guarantee none of them will be) they aren't making anywhere near enough to get any big returns.
There's a reason why a large number of these runfluencers come from extremely wealthy families and are able to spend the most important years of forming a career doing sweet F all...
A lot of these guys are based in the UK and your take home has a fair few deductions especially if earning 150k. So be down close to 90s before even taking expenses into it.
Elson has done nothing to note in the last year whereas Felton has made significant improvements. Get Run it three ways back together and let Felton roast the other two!
He’s won a Euro Cross medal, run a 3.55 mile, 13.35 5k
None of those things are things Fenton will ever get within a reasonable sniff of doing. Whereas Elson could do everything that Felton has achieved with a 3 month pivot

In fact, if you look at Fenton’s 5k and 10k times, Elson had already matched them in the period before he even considered himself a runner way back in 2020/21
