Genuinely curious; what’s the influencer endgame? What are all these YouTubers and Instagrammers ultimately aiming to achieve?
I do have some empathy, in your twenties, a more traditional career path mostly sucks - working for yourself and getting comped trips and gear would be very very appealing.
The lifestyle seems good. But surely they can’t all be making huge money let alone pensions etc.
What happens when reality hits? Do they just influence indefinitely or run some crappy coaching business?
People underestimate how much these moderate size youtube channels make. It is decent money between ad revenue and sponsors across multiple platforms. A comfortable living right now but what will they be doing in 10 years?
The endgame for the savvy ones is to build their profile up big enough to support their own business. Coaching/supplements/merch or whatever. If you have 100k followers you only need a very small percentage to buy your mediocre product to be making big money.
i seem to remember my post getting deleted where I outlined that all these influencers are bonafide retards. This cole news is vindication. Half marathon PB attempts back to back weeks AND HAD BERLIN PLANNED TOO. I think the mileage isn't even the biggest issue, He seemed to be handling that fine until racing the HMs, however he absolutely got into a dick swinging contest with RTJ on instagram about it.
Just to top it off all he's learnt from this is thats he's "not invincible"
I think most people know you can make decent money from it, its more the longevity factor. Even if as a medium/small youtuber you are making 150k a year ( i think this is already ambitious). You then have to take into account all the business expenses which probably mount up to 30/40k (flights/hotels/equipment/paying editors etc) and then getting taxed on top of that, your take home might be ~90k/ year with no benefits.
This seems like decent money at the time but its not ever going to be enough to retire on unless they think they can keep up that level of engagement (and platforms continue to pay this much) for 50+ years which just isn't going to happen. And even if they do invest as much as they can in a smart manner (I guarantee none of them will be) they aren't making anywhere near enough to get any big returns.
There's a reason why a large number of these runfluencers come from extremely wealthy families and are able to spend the most important years of forming a career doing sweet F all...
Not sure how you come to this conclusion from his 2:10 marathon debut.
Not disputing his debut was impressive (i had him to go better based off his training), just thinking long term.
Would you rather train alone in Bushy park, or join in with Phil, Emile, Yee and a few of the others based up there all ahead in the pecking order.
You are making a good point, and maybe he will do that in the future, but training with 2:06 guys, the former two running 200 odd K a week, for your marathon debut would be very, very high risk.
tbh thinking about it even now a guy with 2:10 on the board training with 2:06 guys might even be a bit much. At that level four minutes is massive, you're talking about completely different athletes.
utter embarasement but unsurpising 12th DNF for king bell-end Leonard in recent times. explain that one on the next vid please callum, cheers
There is someone in this thread (always posting under various anonymous usernames) who has it out for Leonard in particular. You can tell it's the same person because in every post they are slating him specifically by name.
Just bizarre behaviour, he must have out kicked them in a schools XC race or something and 15 years ago and they still never got over it.
DNFing a race is not some sort of grave moral failure, people need to relax a little, it's not that deep.
People also need to step back and have some perspective - this is a group with two national record holders, a World Champs finalist, European XC medallists, UK National Cross champions and a guy who ran a 2:10 marathon debut. For context, Cairess ran a 2:08 rebut and Sessemann 2:12 - so right in the middle of the two best guys in the UK.
They also make some of the best youtube content and share it for free?!
The youtube and social media world is full of absolute spoofers, shills and engagement farmers, people should direct their ire towards those people.

Honestly I'd imagine for most of them it's just have fun getting paid to run until either (1) the views dry up or (2)they want to have more stability before they marry/have kids/buy a house etc. and then get a normal 9-5? There's no stigma around social media these days, it won't stop them getting a normal job. If they want to work in marketing etc. it will be a massive asset in fact.
If you're the sort of person who likes the publicity it seems like a personally rational thing to do tbh.

Scott's run was solid - 6th all time UK for the 10,000 and hope he carries this form into the summer.
I think Ellis should not of raced imo, only 6 weeks since a good marathon debut. Poor choice from Hobdell there.
Rory is bit of a fraud. For every good race there are 10 bad ones and he is very poor on the track. There is talent there, and think his setup may need to change to get more out of himself.
And yes Sarah like Ellis did race 6 weeks ago in the marathon. But not sure how long she has left on this team..

Everyone is taxed on their earnings so that's irrelevant. 150k a year is a very good income and in the UK would put you in at least the top 5% of earners. A good portion of their flights, hotels & gear are funded by sponsors, and calling the gear a business expense, whilst true, is not really relevant as they would likely buy a lot of the stuff anyway. Editors are the only real expense and it's obviously tax deductible.
A few years of earning that sort of money without the lifestyle creep that comes with it would set you up nicely to be able plod along making videos earning a few quid here and there for the rest of your life if/when the grift dries up.

Gidey is an Ethiopian so its poor suggesting hes a national record holder and world champ finalist?? they dont have heats for a 10,000m so hows he a finalist?
we are not seriously counting tinpot relay medals an Euro medals are we? the team was soooo goodddd, they got dumped out the squad for the world xc
Ellis was a national xc champ, even Astin won it in an incredibly weak field which was her last decent race
how can DNFing not be that deep when you are happy to jump in front of a camera, take the money and boast about being a pro but fail to do the one fundamental thing a runner is expected to do; start and finish a race? TIME AND TIME AGAIN??? if they want decent content, you have to tackle the big issue rather than play up to the modernday wokeness. Beattie went AWOL all summer as well, big concerns with this bunch
If you check out the Strava of ‘Run the planet’ he did a half marathon in 1:38 but is claiming a 10k PB and his ever first sub 40 from it as he managed that in the second half..
However, it looks like the second half was hugely down hill with a tail wind.
Would you be claiming that?
Does this put him in a prime position to finally get his sub 3 marathon goal?

Ridiculous behaviour and him going on about it in the comments is just cringe. Although if he can run a 37:56 10k downhill at the end of a hilly HM (assuming there's no big GPS issues) I would expect that he's probably got a sub 40 in him in normal conditions.
hard to fully tell, but some of the sessions on the womens side have been weak when you look at their 5k PBs.
Surely training cant be optimal for everyone when youve got a 1500m guy (Callum) through to a marathon guy (Ellis).
Ellis needs to leave the group to focus on marathon training. if I was him id be up north running with Phil S.
Callum, has gone backwards / stagnated whilst the 1500 scene has progressed hugely. How much is this down to his ceiling or the achilles injury we wont know (probably the former).
I think Efrem and Scotts talent has basically gave them some decent results rather then a solid training setup.
Rory seems to DNF alot ....
Im not really sure if Hokas angle with this group is performance or social media coverage.
Would love to see the Run it Three Ways fellas get back together with Fenton absolutely handing it back to Elson.
Elson is still at a significantly higher level than Fenton. Guy ran 1.49, 3.37 and 13.35 a year after having his Achilles cut through.

So "a few years" of £150k sets you up for life now? Are you actually an adult?

I don't think you can draw any conclusions about the world xc relay team selection policies of BA tbch
Elson has done nothing to note in the last year whereas Felton has made significant improvements. Get Run it three ways back together and let Felton roast the other two!
