Potentially Suspicious Runner To Run 836 Miles in 9 Days for "Charity"

You can tell this whole thing smells of scam as RAF, WWTW, and Mattresman are refusing to vome to his defence. They are probably preparing to prosecute. Coupled with the fact that they are scrambling around trying to delete any references of themselves. This is looking really bad.

Mattressman completely wiped their FB page clean of hum.

Not mention his former mates the non-coach, photographer, driver, masseur, dune fella, etc.

This is also EXACTLY what Robert Young (with his RV, driver, helper…and... Charity for the Children. Robbie was also bullied as a child before becoming UltraMarathonManUK) did after he starting reading the thread at LetsRun.com ABOUT Robert Young.

Unfortunately, Robbie discovered that DELETING EVERYTHING was impossible, even though a British doctor said that since Robbie…"had the mind of a child ... and believed in impossible things…that Robbie could DO IMPOSSIBLE THINGS ULTRARUNNING"…even though this same doctor measured Robbie's VO2max on a treadmill test…and Robbie's treadmill test VO2max result was…AVERAGE for a good recreational runner (with a marathon PR over 3 hours…just like Robbie's actual (NOT FAKE) marathon PR).

In conclusion:

Dave clearly always planned to fake the record and claim it.

He never boasted he just MIGHT break it, then fail.

He was definitely going to get it. You can see that by his London marathon post about how he would return to London marathon as a record holder.

So he must have been planning to fake it with the tracker riding the van.

Would you really take with you people that knew nothing about faking it, and rely on convincing them on day one?

I really don't think so.

But once he had to do it properly, he knew he could never finish in time to even make it to London, let alone get anywhere near the record.

Therefore I don't believe he gave up on day 3 because the photographer and driver refused to cheat. He could never have cheated once he set off anyway, as he had been rumbled by us.

He quit because he realised he'd have to do it properly and it would take him four months and he'd miss London marathon!

Rossi's fake time of 3:11 in Allentown is faster than Dave's fake time of 3:12 in London. So Rossi has Dave beat in fake PR.

I wasn't going to do anymore marathons but now I'm thinking I should do one more to see if I can run a real 3:10. Just so I can say I'm really faster than their fake times.

Very easy to spot them, I had a look myself.

Anyone who missed mats could be spotted in the thousands of results by just scanning down each page.

I reckon VLM were wise to him in minutes and took his results down. Otherwise I and others would have spotted him at the time.

Nah. He's a nobody. No way he managed to persuade London to keep him in the results. They just failed to pick up on the missed mats.

If you are very slow the last two or three mat times will be missing, as they start taking them up, but he wasn't slow when he crossed the finish mat, so ALL timing mats should have been in place and working.

RAF Reservist Involved in Charity Scams and Fraud with Wife

What follows is the true story of the fraud committed by Dave Reading and Terrie Reading. There are so many layers to their scamming over many years that I can only touch on the surface about how this came to the attention of the heroic super sleuths at LetsRun.com.

On April 2nd, 2017 a thread was started on the LetsRun forums about a potentially suspicious runner who was posting all over social media and his website that he would beat the world record for the 836 mile LEJOG run from one end of Britain to the other, starting on April 6th. This runner was 49 year old Dave Reading, a mechanic in the RAF Reserves.

Dave was prominently proclaiming that he would beat the current record of 9 days and 2 hours and was doing it for charity in the name of Walking With the Wounded. He even boasted about this to Prince Harry and received a letter honoring his attempt. This piqued the interest of the sleuths on LetsRun because they saw obvious signs of another charity runner scam. What they saw was an average runner with a belly and bad running form proclaiming to be able to beat a world record that many prominent elite runners have failed at. They also saw that Dave had somehow amassed a large number of sponsors for his run that defied all logic for someone that obviously is a fraud.

An investigation was undertaken to look at the past running history of this fraud. What was found was indicative of a slow hobby jogger that cheated in multiple runs including the London Marathon 2016.

On the Royal Air Force Association blog and in YouTube videos, Dave lied about finishing the marathon in a time of 3 h 12 min when official results showed he finished in 4 h 19 min 38 sec. But wait, there's more. Dave cheated by not actually running most of the marathon. Timing mats show he crossed finish line but skipped the proper start and did not cross any of the intermediate checkpoints. He also did not show up in photos along the course except at the finish line.

When the LetsRun sleuths confronted Dave Reading and his wife, Terrie Reading, on Facebook to get an explanation and GPS data to back up Dave's numerous dodgy claims, they were promptly blocked. It was later revealed by close sources that Dave had lied about his finishing time to scam £5000 from a sponsor for himself that was suppose to go to charity.

This prompted the LetsRun sleuths to closely monitor the GPS tracker online that Dave would be using for his LEJOG2017 record attempt. They also committed to having boots on the ground where possible to secretly record Dave to catch him red-handed if he tried cheating, such as by riding in the van that is following him.

What followed was completely farcical. Dave had proclaimed he would run 100 miles for each of the first four days to be on record pace. He miserably failed to even run and just walked. It took all of the first day to just do 49 miles even though Dave had claimed to have done much harder runs in training.

Then on day 2, Dave claimed that he couldn't even walk anymore due to "shredded" feet. This was a damning excuse for someone claiming to be a world class runner. He eventually resorted to riding in his van for 11 miles and riding a bicycle for the an hour while LetsRun tracked him. It was pathetic.

Then on Day 3, the record attempt was abruptly over before it even really began. Posting on Facebook, Terrie Reading claimed that her husband's run had to end early due to a family emergency of the van driver. There was a sense of incredulity in the air. It was later revealed that the driver and photographer riding in the van refused to aid in the scam due to their integrity and honesty.

Dave and Terrie soon made a hasty retreat deleting their website and entire social media existence in the hopes of erasing incriminating evidence. They had shamelessly used their 8 kids to promote their scam on the TV, newspapers, and the internet to get as much attention and money as possible. Now they wanted none of the attention because of the scrutiny of the sleuths. Their scam was quickly unraveling.

Attention was focused on the missing money for this LEJOG. The amount of collected donations declared by the Readings was much too small for the number of sponsors they had and having solicited donations in schools, stores, and sponsors for a year for Walking With the Wounded. Most prominently, the £5000 collected from one of the sponsors during the London Marathon was missing on their donation page.

Then, an old Walking With the Wounded donation page set up by Terrie in 2013 was found. It was for a big "military style fete" fundraiser complete with sponsors providing a 30ft bouncy assault course, live music, BBQ, fully equipped bar, ice cream, cakes, fire engine, soldiers/tanks/equipment, stalls, and a big prize raffle. Terrie declared that a measly £50.00 was raised. It was obvious there was fraud going on. This donation page was then promptly deleted by Terrie Reading as she watched the sleuths working openly for everyone to see.

The clincher was that a source revealed that Terry and Dave had set up a large number of dissolved shell companies over the years including Supreme Valeting Service Ltd, Supreme Valeting (East Anglia) Ltd, Supreme Automotive Logistics Ltd, and D.S Protection & Security. Each of these only existed for a few years and some had outstanding debts. None had any financial filings.

Due to good detective work, it was then revealed that Dave Reading and Terrie Reading had previously changed their names from David Shingler and Terry Shingler. More shell companies were then found that listed them as directors. The investigation of what exactly happened at all these shell companies is still ongoing.

There is a lot more to be revealed and said about this intriguing story of fraud and the betrayal of trust by close friends and family. In all of this are 8 children trapped in an endless loop of scams perpetrated by their parents. Perhaps one day all will be revealed when there is closure.

No. That is not how they work. Don't believe everything that volunteers at expos tell you.

Attach to trainers? Very few races do that anymore. Most races have the transponder attached directly to the bib.

At London the chip is activated at the expo.

You get given a shoe tag and you have to then give it to someone to activate it.

The chips aren't on numbers there.

Had he not activated it, he would have got no finish time, and he did.

If the Driver and Photographer we NOT in on the scam, would it not be more likely that on finding out Dave's plan they not only called a halt to the challenge, but also 'outed' him for it because they were so outraged?

When in fact what has actually happened is a wall of total silence, not one peep from anyone involved - that does not look like the actions of the innocent!

But at least the family know Dave & Terrie for what they have done, not a single one of them has anything on their FB pages about the Attempt or how proud they are about Dave n Terrie's Charity Spectacular!
