Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

My PT has talked about that, but I haven't done it. My chiropractor suggested deep massage in the affected areas to alleviate inflammation, then using ice. He said that if you can't get rid of the inflammation, then stretching will never help you no matter how much you do.

inflammation is a big cause of the scar tissue that can/will build up in the area. that scar tissue can then entrap nerves. and that sucks, take it from one who's been there.

i would wonder if cortizone is any good for fragile fascial tissue in there because cort is known to weaken connective tissues in teh area it is injected.

try homeopathy maybe to deal with the inflammation.

don't take too much advil, though, as you probably know, then your gut will pay for it later.

true- stretching with all the inflammation n nerve irritation will make things worse. been down that road too.

I had cortisone shots/ nerve blocks twice in my attempts at finding anyway out of my pain . The first one lasted for two weeks , It was a miracle, I was sure I was on the road to recovery. That is until I bumped into something and it all came back in twenty seconds. It was like someone let the air out of my balloon .Pure anguish. The second one was six months later, it did not work as well , I still hurt lots , but it lasted for two months (as long as I did no activity). It just brought down the threshold. I was told that I should not risk a third cortisone shot as the tendons around the pubic bone can easily be weakened by cortisone. The nerve block part of the shot did some good in that it let us know that the real injury must be affecting my ilioinguinal nerve. It was a big jump from there to finding someone that understood sports hernias.

The problem is that if you have a SH there is no amount of cortisone that will help it . It is usually a tear to the transverse fascia, around the transverse abdominus and no amount of rest will ever fix it. You may be able to get around with a small tear for years in a comprimised way as I and several others here did. I worked around mine for two or three years before an activity that I couldn't control finally really got me. Before that I learned how to modify my activities so that I minimized the movement around the injury. If you do this long enough you screw up muscle patterns all over your body. After a while you will have all sorts of other aches. For me my back on the opposite side seemed worse then the SH after a year. I also had my left hip and left outer hamstring involved. They could cramp in an instant.

I had been to 8 doctors that all did regular hernia surgeries for a living, including 3 that only do hernias. I had 5 mri's and several ultrasounds. None of these guys could find any sign of a hernia in me and I assure you they tried. There was also a pattern of not believing that sports hernias even exist that seemed to be prevalent.You really need to find a doctor that has knowledge of this type of injury, It is not a regular hernia. A proper ultrasound found two tears in my transverse fascia in the first minute. It took me too long to convince myself to travel to an expert. 12000 miles traveled is nothing compared to another month lost if you really think you have this.

So i have to get surgery with Meyers in the next month and I was wondering what people do right after the surgery for traveling? Do they fly out immediately or do they spend a couple days in philly? Also does anyone have a hip issue as well as a sports hernia? What happens in that situation?

Thanks, that's great info. I'm not totally sure I have this, I've had periods of up to 6 months where it disappeared entirely - is that symptomatic of SH?

I'm less than a 2 hour drive to Philly, and actually work there several days monthly so I would have no problem with scheduling with Meyers.

I stayed one night in the hospital and then took the train back to D.C. the next morning. It wasn't a big deal. You're sore as hell and moving pretty slowly, but as long as you don't have to lift anything heavy it's ok.

I'm not sure about the hip issue.

Do you think that a 6 hour car ride would be bad with the seatbelt and what not?...also, how long did it take you to come back to everyday activities or working out?

A 6 hour ride should be fine, especially on percocet :-) As long as you're not the driver.

I had the surgery on a Friday morning and was at work Monday morning, although I have to admit I was pretty tired at work that week. After 10 days I started Dr. Meyers' rehab program (pool walking, etc...). At 3 weeks I was doing some light jogging.

I only had my left side done and my recovery went pretty quickly. Everyone is different regarding recovery time. You need to let pain be your guide to a certain extent.

I've read this entire thread and thought I'd chime in with some input. I had a sports hernia repaired by Dr. Brunt 3 months ago. The hernia area feels about 95 percent better, but I am still hobbled by a hip inpingment and larbal tear, which I am going to have surery to correct soon. While I never really had any hip pain until recently, my hip doctor (who is an excellent Dr.) told me sports hernia were often the product of a hip inpingment, so this might be worth looking into for those of you still suffering after surgery.

hey so i just found out that I have a tear in my cartilage of my hip and that I also have a sports hernia (with osteitis and a tear in the rectus abdominus). So I have to see a specialist in New york about my hip. What did they tell you you had to do for the hip issue?? What does the surgery involve?

just so you know i went to see dr padgett who works with dr kelly at hss. i brought my films that apparently did show a posterior labral tear.

he and other docs have all told me to leave the hip labrum alone. even post-op, with some pain still lingering in one side.

not that it is the same deal for you. but i think that a hip labral surgery is way more serious than a sportrs hernia surgery and you should at least do the sh surgery first. then take yoru time to heal from taht before really thinking about getting little tools put into that tight joint. at least that is what i was told.

My situation is that my hernia is healed, and the labral tear was caused by my hip impingement, which is where there is some extra bone on the hip joint that makes the joint move incorrectly. They correct this by shaving the bone down, and they fix the labral tear while they are at it. My doctor said if I don't fix the impingement it will continue to worsen. The good thing is it seems this surgery has a very high success rate. In any case, I don't have much choice, but I trust this hip specialist as he is apparently one of the best in the business.

I just found this site today, i have started reading it backwards and i have almost finished. This Forum is amazing. My story, 2 years ago i was training at the track for 100 meters. Pulled everything off the line, glutes, hammy\'s, quads. Took a break, everything kinda healed up except for my left groin. Did the rest, did the physio, countless doctors ( I live in vancouver BC, canada) for over a year. They all dismissed me. I did some research on the internet and found a doctor in the states, flew down to see him, had surgery and mesh put in on my left side after finding 2 tears, oblique and transverse fascia i believe. That was done in dec 2007. Now i am experiencing pain on my right side oblique, upper rectus, right adductor and sometimes a soar right testicle.

My question to anyone.

the results vary from surgeon to surgeon and person to person. you should read back on this thread, i know it takes a long time, but you will find this is the best info you can find on the internet. sounds like a sports hernia to me!

I would also add Dr. Brunt in if you are near the St. Louis area. He did mine 3 months ago, after I had been suffering for over two years, and I have been very happy with the results. He has done a lot of players from the St. Louis Blues, Cardinals and Rams, and tons of pro soccer, and collegiate athletes. He was even voted doctor of the year a few years ago by a St. Louis magazine.

Johnny, i read that you had the surgery with Dr. UM. Are you still recovering from that? I do have major muscle imblalances that deff need working on after my surgery, wherever i decide to go. I am leaning towards Germany. The adductor release thing sounds scary, it sounds like it creates a drastic change in your bodies mechanics. After the surgery i am going to have some IMS done (intra musclular stimulation) i believe is what it stands for. There is a doctor here in vancouver who started this. I have gone to it as a part of my physio which was prescribed to me. But it is a technique similar to acupuncture, except them go much much deeper and it literally does, release the muscles tention, Feels absolutely amazing and instant. Anyways i figure some IMS post surgery and my adductor will actually stay relaxed instead of tightening back up again. Again thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread.

yes i am still recovering...mostly muscle imbalances but i also have some entrapped nerves from the scarring.

the ims sounds like a good plan.

also, something i just learned about is a tens-pulse unit. sort of like neural therapy injections but with a laser so it can go super deep, where needles cannot go. in the sh injury, the genital branch of the genitofemoral nerve can be injured. that nerve is too deep for needles or fingers to get to. the laser can get it though.
