Day 1 thoughts:
- I missed the 1600 because of traffic, but i'm shocked by the times it took to advance. You basically had to run 4:09 on the guys side to run tomorrow - insane! Low 4:50, high 4:40 on the girls side. Field is open. My pick is on Kinga Czajkowska on the girls side. Nasty kick.
- Jasir Fontenot - what a talent, my goodness. He doesn't even have good legspeed, which is the scariest part, his steps between hurdles are just flawless.
- All but one of the favorites made it through to the final in the b400. Smith might still run today considering Hart pulled up in the 200 prelims. Still 5 guys in the final who have run 46 this year already.
- There is nothing I could say about the 100 that hasn't already been addressed. That said, Sizemore is easily the favorite on the girls side for today.
- Insane depth in the 800. Thank you 4x800! 1:51.81 to make it on the guys side, 2:10.59 on the girls side. Multiple under 1:51 on the prelims day. I'm wondering what today is gonna look like - waterfall means they won't be able to get out fast, and running 1:49 the day after a 1:50 is a tough ask for anyone, but surely with a field like this someone will get excited and drag them through in 52.
- Girls 300h is set up to be INSANE! Herbst, Fontenot, and Edwards. Winning time will easily be under 40.
- b200 is set to be anyone's race. Very, very close, but Cy Lugo really passed the eye test. He is still my pick for today. Anyone else realize how insane it is that Prince will podium in the 100, 110, and 200?
- Girls 4x400 is gonna be great. Carlsbad always makes thing interesting, but I suspect Wilson will be far too ahead to catch. Morgan put down a relaxed 52.7 last night so I wonder how she will do today.
- Boys 4x400 depth is insane. 24 teams under 3:20, and you run slower than 3:15.1 and you are out of the final. I don't even know who the favorite is. Whoever got the best night of sleep, I guess. I expect multiple teams to be under 3:10 honestly. The 4x400 is always the event that people drop crazy amounts of time in the the state finals, even though its the last event on the second day. It's the damn 4x400!
