No, I don’t think Jakob at all has maxed out his 10 k potential. And I think he can better it pretty easily with better rest/ preparations. But it also seems to me that he has been a little arrogant/ wrongly when it comes to specific changes / additions he must do in his training to max out. Because this Copenhagen was at least to me really a red flag…
Of course he didn’t say that he would set a WR, or something like that. Because he was of course uncertain about the outcome, given the circumstances. And therefore he also (because he knows that he has called HM “my best distance” ) tried to down play people’s expectations, by your cited sentences, that he knew would resonate with most fans (long season, 1500m focus) although he of course knew it wasn’t all that accurate (short season, just as much focus on the 5000m that he did better in than in the 1500m, as also in the 3000m; this very focused 1500m was his third best event! And how he kept up the mileage, and was afraid of out thinning, even spoke of how he ran races, f.ex plenty 5000meters instead of speed work…).
I will add some little stressed arguments: Somewhere inside Jakob knows that he hasn’t run a single fast race longer than 5000m. (And even not all that fast even there). And he knows that his training doesn’t give any positive or understandable answers about his distance abilities. So he has to base everything on guesses. But he has now four very slow “long” races -2019 xc WC, his 27.54 roads, his best Euros 10k xc, where he should have won with more than 1 minute, (and not 9 sec) given he had something to prove in this hilly course; to revenge his 2019 hilly xc crash, and now Copenhagen. Not a single fast long race! So I think this also pressed up Jakob’s excuse in advance…
But Jakob has been uncertain before and nevertheless done far better than expected. So why would he think he would be slaughtered after 10k -of course he hoped for better! If not he would have chosen a late fall HM instead. Or none. So this must have been a shock for him -why would he be voluntarily crushed by the Africans? Of course he took a chance since he had some hopes (maybe more than 5 minutes faster finish time).
