Amber Williams - former sprints assistant at Columbia, head at Cleveland State, former All-American hurdler to Pomona-Pitzer Men. The reaction of the XC/Distance guys will be... interesting.
CLAREMONT, Ca. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Department is proud to announce the hiring of Amber Williams as the next head coach for men's cross country and track & field and Assistant Professor of Physical Education.

I used to work at Pomona Pitzer and actually applied for this position and the AD was specifically looking for someone with a background in the speed and power events.

There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone is allowed to run their program the way they want. Good luck to her and the program. Not everyone likes change.

Good thing there's more then just one aspect to a track and field team.
No one seems to care when a distance coach is put over the entire program and hires assistants to fill in the other events. But when a sprints/jumps/speed coach is put over an entire program then people freak out. Like hiring a distance coach isn't the simple solution.
I was in a director role before and hired a full time distance assistant who basically acted like our cross coach and there was no issue.

That is because on this board, the only event group that matters is distance.

The difference is Pomona men just won 2 NCAA Cross Country championships in a row (2019 and 2021). It would have been 3 in a row if it weren't for COVID taking away the 2020 season.
Imagine if Florida or Texas tried to become distance focused schools? Sprints coaches here would freak out.
Well that's because those programs have won National Track and Field Championships with Sprint, Hurdles, Relays, and Jumps. Most sprint coaches don't have a fit about Notre Dame having several distance coaches

Bold of you to assume that sprint coaches check this board. This is mostly an echo chamber of distance coaches

Big Congratulations to her and the program. All the best to them.
From my sources of the 3 finalist only one of them had strictly distance focused coaching. So it doesn’t matter be a track & field/cross country coach. Learn and be able to coach multiple events!
