Social distancing worked in China. They have no community spread now. New cases are only imported.
And I am not against social distancing. I just think it's not a long term strategy and nations need to be looking hard at that.
Go ahead and trust scientists. The WHO has a record of making incredibly incorrect and dangerous calls:
In January they said there was no evidence of human to human transmission
They declared a worldwide pandemic after over 100 nations had the virus. When questioned at a press conference why they were hesitating to declare a pandemic, they said "why would declare a pandemic when nations still have a chance to CONTAIN the spread?" Less than one week later, they declared it a pandemic.
The WHO said Ebola in 2014 could infect 1.4 million. It infected 20,000.
The WHO said SARS had a case fatality rate of 3%. Later on in the outbreak, they redeclared it to be 9%.
"Social distancing" didn't work in China. Aggressive quarantining (i.e. locking down entire towns and provinces) and testing has slowed the virus there. I don't think most people in the US can comprehend the things that China did (which is much easier for them to do being an authoritarian country). People were essentially locked in their homes for week and the government dropped food for them. Reports talk about officials putting seals on doors to make sure people do not leave. People traveling to China are now tested right off the plane (in addition to a number of medical checks before and during the flight there).
The measures the US have initiated thus far, are far less than what China has done.
