SM goes to a rigorous prep school apparently and manages to be a dual sport athlete with that rigor. She most likely also commutes to the school since she is from MA and the school is in CT. There is no mention of her boarding. I think that we shall have to see what happens for both next year. Wish them both best trying to balance it all with support they have in place.
Let's not call playing basketball in the winter and running in the spring/fall as being a dual sport athlete. Where I come from that's kids who play softball and run track at the same time, or run XC and play soccer in the same season.
If she can obtain a scholarship and play basketball at a P5 level, I think she has to seriously consider it. If she decides - and that is a big if - to pursue a sports related career more opportunities are with basketball than track. My guess is that basketball coaches will let her know how she rates, and relatively soon.
That's for her prep school. Most Hoops athletes in MA/CT also play selects, (or AAU premiere), So yeah there probably is overlap.

I'm not sure on this. Eitherway she has to gamble on herself one way or the other.
There is certainly more NCAA glamor for basketball but when it gets to the pro ranks it could be argued that the top pros are close. Sadly no one cares about either except for once every 4 years.
While way less pro runners than pro basketball players I bet someone like Jenny Simpson makes more than quite a few WNBA players.

Syd was better than Sophia when she was in fifth grade. From what I remember, they were pretty even when Syd was in 4th grade. She might have even beaten sophia in the central mass xc catholic championship at the end of the season. The results might even be online somewhere. I don't recall her running in the third grade. I have no idea about the soccer story about her brother, but I can say for certain they were on the same peewee team.
I'm glad she's doing so well.
Tuohy will have the better career because she loves running.
Like a lot of basketball players Masciarelli will never be able to mentally fully commit to running. Such b.ballers falsely believe basketball is the better sport and they will always gravitate back to it......
Eventually their running suffers from lack of total commitment needed to make it in any sport....example: Tiger Woods: golf, golf, golf, nothing else.
Yup, she loves running so much she took a pass on the national championship meet. Gotcha.

If her coach shut her down after NY State Meet --- that's not any of your bidness.
She ran several significant races during her 3 seasons. To keep on bringing up the fact that she skipped one meet. The fact that she ran her state meet is far more important than skipping the last open, individual meet. It is ridiculous that a high school junior, who had an incredible 3 seasons, setting records and winning national titles, is being this criticized for missing one meet. Give the kid a break.
Sydney won her first xc race as a 4th grader beating 8th graders at the catholic school meet in MA...check out cool running 2012. I would say she wad born committed to running. She is just a gifted athlete ..

1 meet? More like the biggest meet of the year.
She isn't being criticized fir skipping the meet. We think is was a smart decision because she would have lost. She is being commended for a wise decision.

I think it’s a smart decision but not because she would have lost but because she was clearly not quite 100% and ending her season a little early could hopefully help her rebound and get feeling better. If she indeed was healthy but didn’t run cause she was going to get beat that’s actually a bad decision.
Tuohy ran 9:01 3000 5 months ago. She does not run all out every race -- mostly she races to score points for her team. She may have been hoping to peak for spring track, but for whatever reason she is not ready. Smart to back off now. However, I have to believe that if she is not injured she could still have run faster than 16 for 5000, even if not at peak. Could Masciarelli have done that? What past performances indicate that? Masciarelli is a 2019 NBO champion, good for her. She is a great runner. But saying that she could have kept up with Tuohy seems unfounded.

Next year is shaping up to be the greatest in high school girl's history in terms of overall depth. In the 800, Brooks PR winner Roisin Willis of SPASH in 2:04 as a 9th grader is joined by NBNO winner Michaela Rose also 2:04. In the mile, in addition to Tuohy there is a knot of girls at 4:37-38 already including Parks, Starliper, Starcher and Hart. Brooks PR winner Dudek looks to be in that range as well. Any of these girls would be by themselves out in front most years. Starliper in particular impressed me with her solo front-run at NBNO.
And then of course we have Tuohy, VanDerlende, Hart, Brown, Starliper all under 10:00 already, and Masciarelli and Russell likely in the same shape.
All in all, that is ELEVEN girls at the level of sub-2:05/4:40/10:00. All underclassmen. Just phenomenal.
Vanderlende is a senior, will be at University of Michigan next year.

Agree, but add Mu to 800 list, and take Vanderlende off the mile/2 mile list as she graduates.
