I roll my eyes at usage of the term "dogged it", meaning "didn't put much effort into a run/race". On a run I was once bitten by a dog that was faster than me. I didn't "give 110%", only 109%, and the pooch "went the extra mile" and caught me on my calf. It wasn't bad, fortunately. Why? Because I'm a "fast healer".

It's just a lot easier than saying, "They had no pacers in the race, so they ran slow at first, threw surges in, and the guy with no speed tried to knock the kick out of the speed runners by punishing them with a hard pace from the front over the last 10 laps."
It's just easier to say, "It was a tactical race." Everyone knows what that means...

I feel like I'm in then minority with hating this one. But most of the guys this board places in this category are not actually working very hard at work. I respect them as runners but I wish people would give this a rest.

You're not wrong. If you happen to feel like you are superman despite the lack of competition it may make sense to go for it but generally you'll probably just disappoint yourself if you try to TT a race all by yourself.

You can hate it all you want but the phrase allows knowledgeable people to get through a conversation without having to explain the details.

Go for it, just don't go around saying you "tempoed the race"... sounds insecure and cliche
Hardloper, one day you may be able to actually win a race and then you'll be able to tempo one and tell people all about it.
Actually people will know you did and they'll tell you.
