Then the blame for the DQ lies with her coach. She doesn't know the rules of her event. Like those runners who don't know you can't have your toe on the line at the start of a race.

Good catch to whomever caught that cone. Actually, where a cone is placed can signify how a track is measured, so in some instances it is on the line and others behind or just touching. If I am not mistaken, with a track designed and measured to not have a metal or concrete curb, the cones are on the line. Most new HS tracks fit this category. With a track that was designed and measured to have a curb, and one is not installed, the cones are behind the line. This is somewhat rare and typically pertains to older tracks that have been resurfaced a few times. So in short, the two tracks are measured slightly differently and thus the cones placed differenly as well. However, this all pertains to the large turns and l doubt the steeple curve matters.

Still, that one cone miss-setup could probably be enough to invalidate a record in my opinion, so I believe it is worth a protest as well.

So why not say, each time you step on the line you get a 1-second penalty? Surely the advantage gained by stepping on the line isn't 1 second. It would actually be a harsh penalty without necessarily changing the outcome of the race.

There is no exception in the rule for if the officials placed the cone wrong. So the best you could get is to DQ the official.

And in the official's defense, maybe the cone was placed right, and somebody kicked it. If you start letting runners off for misplaced cones, they'll start kicking them on purpose.

Cone was placed wrong before the race

There is still no exception because of that. Read the rule.

The official needs to see better photographic evidence. There was no infraction.

Darya Klishina competed at the 2016 Olympics even though Darya had a previous Testosterone/Epitestosterone ratio of over 8:1.

A petition needs to be started ASAP and sent to the IAAF to make them change their incorrect decision.

You don't know that unless you were watching thrm place them down. There are officials, photographers, etc down there. Only 1 cones was off. It make no sense that an official would place one cone on the wrong position when it appears the cones has white on them. It way more likely cone was place correctly and disturbed before the race by someone.

Cone was placed wrong before the race

Not that it makes any difference, cos she cheated, end of, but the cone was correctly placed and it got moved, check the video footage.

Colleen Quigley, talking about Colleen Quigley, she was not going to medal, great if she made the final but Colleen Quigley, she stepped on the line, broke a rule and got a DQ, Colleen Quigley, don't break the rules next time!

Not sure if Jonathan Gault posted this on here or not. I talked to him tonight and he said he asked Amanda Brooks of USATF if there was an update on Quigley. He said what Monti said. She's been DQd. Basically, once they saw she stepped on the curve, that was that and they DQd here.

I've asked her agent for comment .

So it appears that meet organizers are allowed to violate their own rules with no repercussions but if an athlete steps on a line in the middle of a 2 mile race, you are gone.

Personally, I think with the cone being too far inside, all times should be invalidated. It's like running a meet without a kerb.

Like I said earlier, big organizations like the IAAF, USATF, UK Athletics never want to own up to their own mistakes.

They would rather throw an athlete under the bus to save face.

After Quigley ran 4:03 in Huesdan, I felt like she was going to have a break through and run 9:07-9:10 at World's. I guess we'll have to wait till the Diamond League final. You know she will be there.

There's no exception in the rule for a misplaced cone. Would you feel better if the official in charge of cones is DQ'd?

I don't think there's any athlete out there unaware that the line is the boundary and the cones are there only to help guide them. If all but one cone is in place, it's not difficult to see where the line goes. It's still clearly visible where the cone was.

Now if they had painted over the line and drawn a different line, that might be a real issue.

Read the whole rule from the start: no section of kerb had to be temporarily removed. For the steeplechase, there is no requirement for cones to even be placed; it is just a courtesy.

^read carefully, this only applies to the water jump approach ('where athletes divert from the main track') not to the water jump exit ('where athletes re-enter the main track').

Btw, in soccer, the ball is not out unless it is ENTIRELY over the line and you see green between the ball and the line.

This isn't true. Rule 160 is a generic rule that applies to all tracks at all points. The rule you are referencing simply restates the general rule for the specific case where the curb is removed.

It would be interesting to get an official ruling on what happens when a race is run on a non-conforming track.
