You obvious don't watch basketball. If LeBron were trying to check in at the scorers table not in uniform, the game goes on and he goes back to the bench to fix it before the next break where he can try to check in again.

This whole thread makes me A) hate Rojo so much more than I already did and B) realize just how stupid Letsrun can be.
Everyone out there arguing that he should've been allowed to run because bibs are pointless: that is 100% not the goddamned point. Stop saying the rule is pointless: I think we all agree it's fairly pointless, or at least not 100% needed for 13 guys to race a 1500. However, if the NCAA required men to paint their left ring fingernail in order to participate at Nationals, the athletes that want to compete would have a painted fingernail.

Can anyone verify it is even a rule you that you have to wear a bib? I can't find it?

If bibs are assigned by meet management, they must be worn to compete.
first off, in my opinion the athlete should have been dq'd. it's a really, really, really simple rule that takes no energy and minimal intelligence to follow. follow it.
yes, there are lots of stupid rules in sports--for years, in california high schools, they instituted a no-jewelry rule (ostensibly, in the name of safety). this was harder to follow, because athletes of both genders weren't used to it, and it resulted in disqualifications. as a coach, it took me a while to get in the habit of checking my athletes before they went to check in, but after one dq, i learned. fortunately, the rule was rescinded after a few years.
but bringing your jersey and putting on your bib should be as automatic as bringing your shorts, your socks, your spikes and following whatever logical and illogical routines we all follow when preparing for a race.
also, for those that say a bib and/or jersey serve no purpose:
1) they both may be used by competitors to identify each other. there are always certain jerseys i may look for--as a former ucla bruin, you better believe i looked for usc jerseys--and no, i didn't always know them by appearance only. as a coach, i may tell my athletes to look for certain jerseys as well. certainly a kid from cornell is not going to know the msu kid by appearance, and a fair part of strategy is scouting your opponents by their schools. and if there are two kids from msu, i may just want to know who is who by their bib number. remember, it's still a team sport in college, and the meet is scored as such.
2) the bib is extremely important for advertising, which is something our dying sport still needs...
finally, he should be disqualified just for being named justine.

The bib is the apparent subject to which "compete" refers in this sentence (there is no mention of the athlete). No one is arguing that the bib should have been allowed to compete.
Presumably the rule would say "the athlete must wear a bib, if assigned by meet management, in order to compete" if that's what they meant.

You need a ton of stuff. Should be able to upvote posts, should be able to edit posts, should be able to add images to posts, should NOT be allowed that moderators can dismantle any posts that they don't like, should NOT be allowed for the BroJos to change the title of posts to what they think is a better title (this is baffling to me).
Basically, this format is absurd. The reason it's thriving is not because it's the best set up, but rather because it's been around the longest in a niche sport. I think the BroJos believe the former and as such, don't want to improve on this antiquated format.
Someone said that his singlet was stolen. No idea if that's true, but it's definitely a possibility. When I was competing we would warm up in our sweats with a spike bag containing our spikes and singlet in the area.
It's possible that someone could have some other version of this as well. Perhaps a different small bag with singlet/bib.
Since these are typically ubiquitous Nike bags, isn't it reasonable to think that some other athlete could erroneously pick it up and walk off?
What do we do there? Just DQ the athlete for "being stupid" like so many here seem to think is the case?

not saying the jersey/bib is essential, just saying it may (or may not for others) serve a purpose, especially in team scoring. i would bet that in the tour de france, team bibs/jerseys matter when looking for a leadout during a sprint, and knowing where the yellow jersey is.
by the way, my father also raced for the ucla cycling team in the 60s. he told me ucla gave them ucla basketball jerseys...
