But do they do anything? Nike was already sponsoring most of the best prior to the Vaporflys and the Adios (basically cardboard) are still faster.

Might as well ban the whole Mizuno brand since their Wave Plate does the same thing. What if I have a XC flat that I use for road races? Some of those have a plastic shank. Banned as well?
If these shoes didn't have a swoosh on them I have a feeling there would be less controversy.
Same with Skechers and Hokas. They both have a spring-like effect.
If you try on the shoes. It’s more so the shape of the outsole. Kind of forces you on your toes
Carbon fiber player doesn’t need to be there
Also could be a mental thing.

I agree with this. But even if you want to argue that it doesn’t give a mechanical advantage, Nike markets it like it does. People use it because they think it does. The only mechanical advantages, even if they are something like the shape, stack height, spring, responsiveness, etc., should not come from shoes.
It should be about who can be the best runner in all aspects. Not excluding biomechanics or efficiency. The winner should be the best runner, the not the one with the best shoes.
Let’s save the mechanical part for triathlons. Keep them away from running and STOP ruining the sport, Nike!
