For Kipchoge? That's a bet I'd take, and throw A LOT of money on.

Just checked the IAAF rules on pacing:-

"Rule 144: Assistance to Athletes

2. Any athlete giving or receiving assistance from within the competition area during an event shall be warned by the Referee and advised that, if there is any repetition, he will be disqualified from that event. if an athlete is subsequently disqualified from the event, any performance accomplished up to that time in the same round of that event shall not be considered valid. However, performances accomplished in a previous round of that event shall be considered valid.

Note: In cases under Rule 144.3(a), disqualification may be made without warning.

3. For the purpose of this Rule, the following examples shall be considered assistance, and are therefore not allowed:

(a) Pacing in races by persons not participating in the same race, by athletes lapped or about to be lapped or by any kind of technical device (other than those permitted under Rule 144.4(d))."

So definitely illegal whether they drop in and drop out or just take it easy and get lapped.

One of the pacers is going to decide to keep running, get lapped, and then come back for the win when everybody else blows up at 21 miles!!

Couldn't they have it be a staggered start and still be record eligible, then when people caught those who started in front they wouldn't be lapped. We have age-graded races where the older participants start first and they are designed so everyone finished together.

Let me throw this out there: If you were a marathoner with a PR of 3:00 to maybe 3:10 and Nike offered to set you up just like this in an effort to break 3:00 (It's possible for ordinary runners to take bigger chunks of time off their PR's than world class runners) and you were able to do it, would you consider that your new PR, or just an artificially fast time not achieved in the spirit of road racing in a mass marathon. I wouldn't.

Oh yeah. I remember those -- I had a pair. One drawback was that when I got tired, the extended heel would clip the opposite ankle. Anyway, I also remember the fuss that was made about them. I never ran a race in them -- I had my Elites for that.
