Because he's probably got more chance of getting bragging rights here than getting them running a fast marathon. It doesn't matter that he's a trail runner. Trail runners stick to trail running because they know they'll be a joke if they have to do any race with actual metrics and expose them for frauds.

Road marathons are a totally different sport, and they're also pretty damn boring for the most part. This dude makes a good living running up mountains and spectacular trails, and you think he should have any interest in running around on asphalt for 2 hours? Get a clue.

I have tried it and have won and placed in events. I've been racing on trails since I was a kid, well before most runners even try out for their first XC team.
I also don't think that it's easy, and never implied that - that's a weird interpretation to make. But I have been exposed to be not as fit as I thought I was by doing a lot of road races.

It's not about fitness, it's about what you're training for. A guy training to race up mountains isn't going to be fit for running 5:00 miles, and the road marathoner isn't going to be fit enough to do a few 1000' ascents and keep racing.
I'm more of a road runner who enjoys mountain/trail running, and I regularly get beaten on trails by people 2 minutes slower over 5k. I don't think they're avoiding competition or anything, they're just doing what they like.
Anybody have any idea when he's actually going?
I gather they've already been there almost a month, and I think he said it was planned as an 8-week trip?

Spot on, why run road marathons when you can make a great living doing something you love in the mountains. Spending the Winter in the mountains running, climbing and skiing.....doesn't it make you wish you were pounding the pavement in the city.
Watch a few of his video's he has done so much preparation and openly admits it's likely they will need to come back next year if it's not perfect to go.

Apparently a short message to say still acclimatising up high somewhere, but the snow was very thick but all was ok.
