He comes across in the interviews as a humble guy, but what he just decided in his first Olympics at his only shot at gold that year, after a non stellar season, that yep a WR was what he should go for even before he'd done a round. Very odd, and promising it to Seb Coe with what is going on in IAAF that just looks dodgy now.

we are talking about arguably 2nd best athlete running this decade, with only bolt definitely superior & aries vying for 2nd with 12.80WR but Rudy may be as good at 800 as aries is at 110h if relative participation numbers considered
if kenyan fed haven't money to go testing, then wada woud & wouda tested him helluva lot as part of their OOC testing programme for "target testing"
there is little chance he is doping as wada wouda been testing him hugely since '09 when he ran 1'42.01

it was very possible he coud run WR in games as his 2 previous WRS had crap drafting & that tangui was only likely asked to be pacer as was his friend but utterly rubbish as pacer, with no ability to judge speed & slow down to ensure Rudy got drafting
Rudy effectively ran his 2 WRS with no drafting & those splits weren't great in terms of consistency
there was helluva lot more to come from him in '12, the peak-season of his career
as for coe, i doubt Rudy gave a damn about him except that in kenya, it was probably believed coe was "owner" of the games as he won the bid from a seemingly fait-accompli paris win for '12 games
coe was "bwana kuba" of games organisation & therefore worth showing "respect" to him, which was a nonsense belief

I think the main reason no one runs a WR in the Olympics in middle distance events is the rounds, where after 3 rounds in 4 days it is fairly odd to be better then you ever have been, then in a one off, low pressure race with pace makers.
