Honestly, maybe I'm confused, but the course rules explicitly state no one without a bib is allowed on the course. And after Boston, the security at Twin Cities is pretty tight. So the police should have no issues hauling protesters off the course or blocking them from entering, right? Obviously it will require a lot more manpower than the usual marathon security, but still.

They didn't have the right to block the freeway or the railway lines either. I'm hoping that MN will finally stand up for its self.

What's the big deal? The BLM movement in the twin cities is pathetically small. They tried to disrupt the MN state fair and accomplished nothing.

I think that's the problem...manpower and the length of the course. The BLM group has said exactly where they intend to meet, but something tells me they will "activate" their protest somewhere else on the course.
If 40-50 protesters show up, and make it onto any point on the course before a large number of police arrive to remove them, they will indeed have disrupted the marathon. I imagine that if a handful of police arrive on scene, they will have to wait for a larger number of officers before beginning to remove and detain the protestors.
If the BLM crew stops the lead runners for even 5 minutes...I would consider that a disaster for the event. Hopefully Twin Cities comes up with a solid plan, and it can serve as a template for other marathons that seek to deter protestors from hijacking their event.
Portland was almost disrupted by occupy, but they smoothed it over. It was well planned ahead of time. Occupy understood that runners had NOTHING to do with them.
This one, from what I've read, is no compromise by one side despite runners having NOTHING to do with them. And the event organizers don't have a plan for the no compromise. How could they?
What would you do if you were running this? Alternate event? If I were running, I'd be researching alternate marathons. In which case, the one side has already won.

As someone that's running, this is going to be a total non-event so not changing plans at all. This is a pretty small group, certainly a group that's manageable for the local police. Not to mention nearly ALL of the hundreds of thousands of spectators are more than happy to assist in making sure no one is impeded from running the race. BLM St. Paul has been a peaceful group, so if I were spectating myself I'd be more than happy and feel more than safe to help out to block them if the cops weren't able to get to a certain spot in time.
So might there be a small disturbance or two along the side of the course where a few overly eager protesters attempt to interrupt the race? Sure, but they'll be detained immediately. So yeah, it's been a fun little distraction from obsessing about the weather. Which looks great btw.

I work as a criminal defense attorney, but I would be cheering for the D.A.'s office on this one. I am wondering if a creative DA could actually charge the protesters with assault. If someone is walking down the street, and I stick out a foot to trip them up, that would be assault. Why should it be any less if the person is running down the street in a street especially reserved (at that particular moment) for running?

That is so ridiculous it is untrue, if I run a marathon and my way is purposely blocked, I am not allowed to charge through, or I could be charged with a misdemeanor or more. I bet the people doing the blocking won't be arrested though...
If you touch one of the protesters you will spend a night in jail
just make sure you "run" through the line, if you let up or change form you won't be able to claim that you didn't see them
