One could run backwards on the opposite direction rotating track to compensate for that issue at hand thus actually run forwards in a backwards direction on said backwards rotating marathon on a track. It is possible herewith in that one could too be lapped and come back to win, reminding us that it could probably happen during a marathon on a track.
This thread, which I have not waded completely through, is quite timely. Today I ran a track marathon. What made this one unique was that it was run in La Paz, Bolivia (elevation 12,000 ft). The pace started hot and stayed hot but I eventually got 48 lap lead. 25 miles was reached in 2:04:23. I was flying. Then I fell apart, badly. I started crawling. I threw up numerous times. Eventually I was 10 m from the finish when the alpaca I was racing came storming by for the 48th time after I had lapped him/her (I'm not sure) 48 times earlier in the race. I was defeated. By a lapped alpaca. At 12,000 ft. In a marathon. On a track.
Devastated.
I'm sure someone's already said this, but I'm too lazy to look. Wouldn't the perfect place for this to happen be a marathon on a track?

What about this track? If a marathon were run on this track, you could lap someone like 50 times and still come back to win. Therefore the answer to the OP's original question is yes, a lapped runner could come back and win as long as it's a marathon on a track.

I was just in the stands at a track marathon and the guy who won was lapped probably 40 times. it was a very small track, maybe 40 meters. he iced his left knee for like an hour afterwards while everyone else finished. so yes, it can happen
here's proof:
I was at an all-comers meet once. The guy leading the 3000 stopped to grab a dog who'd come onto the track (maybe his dog). Well the dogged licked or lapped him several times while the guys wife came to get the dog. He then went on to finish, and yes, win the race.
