in reply to the op, he simply wanted to win...they ran championship style racing to an extreme and he out-kicked arguably the best white distance guy ever. he gets a scalp the he may never get again in his life.
on another point, did anyone else think rupp didn't look nearly as relaxed as he did in the 10k...
I dislike rupp cause he looks like a pu$$y..his smile is gay and he thinks he is the shisnit....he worked with ritz in the 10k but blasted the last 800 for what?....what a douche....he then tries the same thing in the 5k and cannot drop bum....there are gonna be 3 kenyan and 3 ethiopians in the olympic final faster than bum...i hope rupp trips....and no i cannot beat rupp in any race....he is fast he just looks like the kid on the block who gets mad if he does not get his way so he takes his football or games home.

Rupp demonstrates once again why it is so hard to be a Rupp fan. He should have just said "Bumba-who?" chuckled and congratulated the other racers. Why all the 12 year old antics? I love the shape the guys is in, but he has to get fierce and not in a Justin Bieber way.

we all have seen so many of these 2nd tier runners do this before(prelims & Semis), just like in the mens 800(over symmonds). Winning their heat thinking they belong only to give themselves false hope. Winning their heat may be the only time they will ever have a chance to win, so many do it saying it builds their confidence. I say they are fooling themselves. In Bumbi cause, he got it wrong, which is to bad, history shows he is no Galen Rupp.
I couldn't agree more with you about history and Galen's place in it. However, with that said is Andrew suppose to worship Galen's place in history or try to write a history of his own?Galen threw the first punch and like any good fighter(who cant be intimidated by his opponent IN ANY WAY)Andrew counter punched. Another idiot projecting his own crap on another. I've hung out with Rupp, and I've seen enough to tell you for certain that not only is he not a petulant child, he is a just plain focused athlete. I also re-watched the broadcast and it was clear that once he finished he was looking for someone in the sidelines, or looking to navigate his way out to get his sweats, and whatever recovery rituals or mini work out Alberto had planned for him.

Hey Duck, why don't you go rewatch it and catch Bumbi's reaction after Galen snubbs him on the handshake. You'll see that Bumbi's facial expression changes and he shrugs his shoulders, indicating that he locked eyes with Galen and extended his hand for a handshake, but Galen turned his back on it. I realize this is a prelim and there's not a need to get a lovely after the race, but a harmless handshake or fist bump or whatever never hurt anyone, especially when someone extends their hand out and you blatantly disregard it.

The lack of real world, competitive running experience on these boards is incredulous. Bumbi was not giving himself false hope by slightly outkicking Rupp in a prelim. He knows where he stands and he knows where Rupp stands. Obviously history shows he is no Galen Rupp, that goes without saying. But the only way he will be become better than or equal to Rupp is by challenging him, by beating him. Yes, this was only prelim and it doesn't mean anything, so let's leave it at that. There is no unwritten rule that Bumbi should yield to Rupp. Did Tergat let Geb win in Sydney just cause Geb was the greatest distance runner ever at the time? No, just like Bumbi isn't going to let Rupp win just because he is one of the best US distance runners of all time. Y'all need to realize that this is a competitive sport and you don't give your opponent an inch if you can help it.
Since the trials prelim and lean at the tape, Bumbalough has had his name mentioned more in the last couple of days then all the years of his career leading up to it. He may still not be a relevant factor, but at least now he's a topic of discussion for a national track and field audience. As far as Rupp goes, either people are looking for a reason to get down on the guy or are way too sensitive and too quick to get thier panties in a wad.

OK, perhaps Rupp was totally out of it after the race and didn't see Bumbi's gesture. He still has a lot to learn about being a normal human being- ergo, why he has so many detractors. He's the greatest caucasian distance runner of all time most likely, but maybe some PR coaching could help his future earnings potential.
Andrew is at the peak of his career- it was a great move to outlean Rupp and I expect a big effort in the final. Bumbi's probably in 13:10 shape at least.

Bumbalough won the heat because he felt like it. Rupp also tried to win the heat. The prevailing attitude of Oregon fans seems to be that Rupp should have just been allowed to win the heat, I sincerely don't understand that.
The arguments keep saying 'winning the heat doesn't matter' - well then it DOESN'T MATTER. You can't say it doesn't matter and then complain about how unnecessary and childish and unsportsmanlike it was. It matters or it doesn't.
If it doesn't, stop complaining about it. If it does, good for Bumbalough.
